Basic Character Creation
Part 2: Skill Set

Table 1: Real-World Skills

To gain the advantages of these skills, you the player MUST have them in the real-world, they are NOT pretend qualifications, but a reflection of your genuine ability translated in to game-world advantage. The idea is to encourage players to acquire skills that are useful to the CONTACT campaign. For example the "MEDICAL" skill brings in more certified First Aiders. Plus as mentioned before, you are not only more likely to remember what they are, but know how to put them to good use.

These skills will be expressed in the form of qualification badges and ribbons, see the Decorations, Medals & Awards page.

To simply answer the host of questions, just copy and paste the whole list in to an email, and cut out the skills you DO NOT have. No need to individually delete all the many "YES" or "NO" tags, as it will be obvious what you do and don't have. But don't forget to provide longer answers where required, and if you have any problems use the "Contact Us" link at the top of this page.

And again, you are reminded that you do not have to answer any of these questions if you don't want to. Simply skip down to Table 2, and if again, you want to bypass that, go ahead, but you will need to read Table 3 before moving on.

MEDICAL In CONTACT there are three medically related roles that you can take on. The first is to role-play when in-base as a Doctor, for which no real-world qualifications are required. To reward this you would be asigned to the Medical branch, and gain the extra 100 points earned each year for performing the role, which involves working between missions. Alternatively you may choose to play a Field Medic for which you must be either a current or lapsed First Aider or higher. Field Medics are not required to serve as in-base Doctors unless they want to. The final role is not really a role at all, its a label, and is used for those players who are either currently or previously qualified medically, but who do not wish to play any kind of medical role. Such players are labelled as "First Aiders" and are only asked to help in a real-world emergency. Note also that Field Medics and First Aiders are catogorised as either Class C, or Class L, meaning "current or "lapsed". To encourage players to maintain or gain first aid qualifications, Field Medics Class C can do more in the field than Class L's to help their team mates, and of course they get more points.

READ ME
Before Choosing Your Branch Of Service

Now that you have completed this section, you will want to go to the In-Character (IC) page to choose your Branch Of Service (BOS), but wait...

To save you a lot of time and possible heart break, you need to know that the page you are about to open is an IC page, which means it is written as though you really were in the military, and So it is not as clear as to which of the 15 BOS are actually available to you as a new player. However, most players select Infantry as it is the simplest to start with. But here's the list and a few words of advice to help you on your way. When you have made your choice, note it in the email and send it in, and your character will appear on-line shortly, or at the same time or just after your first game.

PP = Promotional Points. See this page for an explanation and a Chart.

Infantry INF 0 PP The easiest and most popular
Armour ARM 0 PP Intended for players who own and wish to deploy a military vehicle.
Aviation AV 0 PP Intended for players who own and wish to deploy an aerial reconnaissance drone, or have a helicopter.
Engineers ENG 100 PP Intended for those who are happy to be in constant demand to build or repair bits of kit for other players or the plot team.
Intelligence INT 100 PP This BOS is aimed at those who are keen to get to grips with the main story arc. It involves a lot of reading and writing of reports, as well as briefing the other Marines about what is known. Often taken up by players, who for whatever reason are less excited or able to go in to the field. Computer skills are a must.
Judge Advocate General JAG 100 PP For the rules lawyers and budding NCIS fans out there. We've never had a Courts Martial, but we came close some years ago. You'll need to fight your way through the UCMJ. Meanwhile you can hit the field with the rest of the grunts if you wish.
Medical MED 100 PP For those who are happier to role play a Doctor, treating the grunts when they return battered from an off-world mission, and only occaisionlly risking it all on the battlefield. FYI for anyone with a First Aid qualification who wants to play a Field Medic, this is normally done as part of a combat arm such as the Infantry or Special Forces.
Staff Specialist SS 500 PP Intended for those players who can no longer, or who never could, go in to the field, but are happy to stay warm and dry back at the bunker to crew the Combat Information Centre. Operate computers, and once we have got them sorted out, operate the long range radios, so as to support the troops in the field. Often take a a dual BOS, typically Intelligence. As Staff Specialists are Marines who serve as on-base personnel ONLY, and as they will never have Flight-Status to go off-world, they are exempted from the EICU requirements (in game training) for promotion beyond Private.

Okay we are at that possible pause point again. If you wish to, send in your data, and upon my reply, you should go and sign up for our Yahoo Groups via the CONTACT Mailing Lists  page, by which time our moderators will be aware of your impending arrival. Alternatively, press on...

The next page is where you can choose your Branch Of Service. The default is the Infantry, but there are other options. Note some are only available to established players with some experience of the game.

We look forward to meeting you, shooting you, and making you run away... well, maybe not, but at least we can guarantee you good company and good fun.
