Gearing Up

Introduction

There are two phases to the process of Gearing Up to be a CONTACT player:

  • What Kit Do I Need For My First Events?

  • ...And Once I'm Hooked?

What Kit Do I Need For My First Events

Firstly we are a club, and we aim to help you get the most out of what we do, and so are happy to help sort out, source or lend you any kit you will need to play.

Any CONTACT specific kit will be lent to you, and only once you are committed to playing the campaign, will you be asked to get your own. Again we will help you find what you need.

Basic Combat Kit

If you have played airsoft before and have all your own kit, then just come with what you have got, there is no need to spend a fortune on new gear, uniforms, insignia etc., wait until you have decided whether or not CONTACT is the game for you.

If you do not own any kind of military clothing or equipment of any sort, you will need to acquire the absolute minimum to play. So if you are starting from scratch we recommend that you get your basic uniform in one of the approved camouflage patterns, as it will save you money in the long run. And if you decide that our particular version of airsoft is not for you, the kit you will have bought will serve you very well at any other site, or indeed have a good resale value. See the links below for more details, or get in touch with the School, and we will be happy to help you source what you need.

Weapons & Webbing

As we are a club and not a business, we do not hold a stock of weapons for hire. So if you do not own a weapon, one of our members will be happy to loan you one of theirs, on the understanding that if you break it, you will pay for its repair or replacement.

If you do own your own weapon, and as long as it does not exceed the national standard of 350fps with a 0.2g BB, then for your first events, this is perfectly fine.

If you do not own any webbing, that is the kit worn by the military for the carrying of ammunition, water and other supplies, we can arrange to lend you what you need. And as before if you already own such kit, just bring what you have got and use it.

Your First Event Kit Check List

For your first game we will lend you at no extra cost the following items:

  • A full face paintball mask and carry case,, to protect your eyes, ears and face. NB: if you already own a set of lensed goggles (no mesh goggles), lower face and ear guard (mesh or solid), then subject to examination they will be acceptable.

  • The specialist items of a Personal Emergency Safety Kit (see link below)

  • An In-Character medical kit for dealing with your "wounds".

  • Your In-Character ID Card

  • Weapons and ammunition (if required)

For your first game you must provide yourself with the following items:

IMPORTANT: If you are buying from scratch, please get in touch with the School so we can advise you on what to buy. See the article on Battle Dress Uniform at the bottom of this page.

  • A hat, or a helmet (balistic or bump type) to protect your scalp.

  • Either a scarf, bandana, scrim net, snood or a shemagh to protect your neck.

  • A combat jacket/shirt and trousers.

  • Boots, with good ankle support. Military boots are best, but hiking boots will do. No trainers for field wear.

  • Full fingered gloves to protect your hands. No fingerless or half fingered gloves.

  • A minimum of 300ml+ of plain water for field use, housed in a military water bottle/canteen/flask, or Camelbak, or even just a simple commercial plastic bottle of water (available on site for purchase from the bunker mess hall).

  • Spare clothes and footwear for use in base if your field kit gets soaked or extremely muddy.

  • A bed-roll: either a sleeping bag, blanket, air-bed or similar. There are bunk beds in the bunker but these are old display items, but some players use them to lie on. Otherwise people set up their bedding anywhere within the bunker. It is never cold inside and so you just need what you feel you want to be comfortable.

  • Personal toiletries and medicines. NB: There are showers, but you will need to request there use prior to or upon arrival, to ensure the system is switched on, as it takes a while to heat up the water.

  • Spare glasses and contact lenses (if used)

  • Cash or cheque book, sorry no credit cards.

  • Wristwatch

  • Torch, with fresh batteries (or fully charged), plus a spare set, or second back-up torch.

  • Pocket notebook and pen or pencil

  • Lap Top or Tablet with keyboard (optional, but recommended)

....And Once I'm Hooked?

Depending upon the nature of your desired role, combatant or non-combatant field operative, in-base only non-combatant operative, Marine or civilian, medic, scientist, body guard, etc., you will need to equip and clothe yourself accordingly.

This could mean that you may wish to buy the authorised Battle Dress Uniform (BDU), and or its in-base posh equivalent, the Service Dress Uniform (SDU), with all their insignia, so as to look the part on or off the battlefield.

Alternatively or as well, you may wish to get a white lab coat, set of surgical scrubs, or even a bio-hazzard suit!

Or finally, a his or hers civilian work suit, plus a dinner jacket, or posh frock for those special ocaisions.

But whatever you decide, before you buy, check with me, Dean Wayland, as I can advise you on what to get etc., so you do not end up being disappointed and out of pocket.

See the following related links which will take you to pages that deal with all the specialist uniforms, equipment, and other kit used by players of CONTACT.
