OPERATION LOSECOAT FIELD

August 1-3 2008

General Briefing

Issued: @15:00Z 08/01/2008

Unusually CON-72, and it's British contingent serving under the title OPERATION LOSECOAT FIELD codename, is the first Expeditionary Operation for 2008, as CON-71 (OPERATION MONS GRAUPIUS in the UK) had to be replaced by a Service Operation, due to the Gate system remaining inactive, providing no opportunities to launch missions, not even to C068W (Fort Bifrost), as consequentially the AD1471 could not be engaged through the narrow band wormhole. NB: the operational name of "MONS GRAUPIUS" is available for you to reassigned to a later Expeditionary Operation at your desgression.

Regarding the absence of the afore mentioned Expeditionary Operation, it should be noted that the annual cycle was believed to have stabilise from 2002 onwards with CON-036 OPERATION EDGE HILL 06/28-30, in to the present pattern of circa four usable wormhole activity cycles only roughly occuring in the second half of the calander year, but with what at the time was considered some minor aborations:

However now analysis of the past cycles can be interpretted differently, indeed our current period may in fact be the abaration. 2001 was Sunspot Maximum, which at that time was considered as having been responsible for the reduction in the actual number of viable wormholes in the period 1999-2002 . However the next Sunspot Maximum is not scheduled until circa 2012, and so this factor cannot account for the late commencement of activity in 2008. But, it has been suggested by some of the staff here at GATEWATCH that we may expect an increase in the activation cycle during the inter-maximum years, resulting in more operations being redesignated as Expeditionary, but probably with low mission numbers, but nevertheless occuring in the first half of the calander year, much as in the period 2003-5. This situation may of course be being exasibated by the increase in the uni-directional Graviton Waves detected within all wormholes since CON-56 at OPERATION STALLING DOWN 11/25-27/2005, which may compound the issue in to effecting the normally quiet period at the cusp of the year (December-February). Therefore at this time, it is recommended that all operatives prepare for the possible conversion of at least the normal March/April Service Operation in to a low level Expeditionary one during the 2009 and 2010 tours.

Damage Report

With reference to the damage report notification issued at 19:00Z 11/16/2007, ssee the Gatewatch Report for CON-068 "OPERATION WINCHESTER", be advised that the repairs to the Gate Tower's alarm and defence systems remain outstanding following the installation and testing of the XAD1471 equipment begun on 08/03/2007 as part of the "Project Midguard" program. The work has been delayed due to technical and supply problems, but is scheduled for completion by no later than 09/26/2008, coinciding with the start of CON-73 "OPERATION GATE FULFORD".

As SSI Inc. remains as the prime contractor for the XAD1471 and the new base defense systems their staff have absolute authority during the on-going work on Floor 1 of RGHQ-51. With the exception of the related missions, the Gate Tower is for the duration of this operation strictly off limits to ALL UNMC personnel. Note that with the exception of flights using the XAD1471, only a basic flight service is available for your missions during CON-72. Flight crews MUST take extra special care in the Gate Tower as many systems still remain exposed (6kv) for on-going repairs and the installation work. It is not practical to shut these sub-systems down, as they constitute essential components of the XAD1471 and the Gatewatch systems.

Estimated Flight Conditions

All signal spikes on the Gatewatch system have stabalised at an energy levels 6× above normal, this means that there has been no increase over those recorded at CON'-68. The Gate Tower's Gravity Wave detector is likewise continuing to pick up strong signals of a similar magnitude, which means that the Gate is once again "leaking" gravity. Thus as per CON-68 we can not garuntee crew safety within the wormhole. "Anti-G" suits will be issued to Flight Crews to aid in reducing the risks of black outs in flight. Please be aware these are standard USAF and RAF issue Anti-G suits which are only rated to 9G (the max for fast jet aircrews). Note that any personnel who fail their medical, will automatically lose Flight Status and be asigned to Ground Crew duties, so as to avoid unnecessary casualties. Be aware that during CON-68 the Russian and American Regiments operating from SITE-54 (Russia) only suffered 2 WIA and no KIA due to the in-flight G forces, which is a reduction over the previous operation, presumedly resulting from the additional training post CON-67.

ABC Levels

The aggregate post CON-68 M1/M2 ABC level stands at 323 units, that is in excess of tripple the volume detected prior to CON-52 OPERATION BANNOCKBURN 03/4-6/2005. "100 units" was the base line reference figure at that time, a value that had remained stable since 1947. At CON-68 The total of M1 type ABC recovered from equipment deployed off-world achieved a total of 320 units, which is 220 units over the pre-CON-52 levels, which is only a total increase of +4 units over those of CON-67 (316u), which implies an overall slowing in the rate of increase. However, there was a significant jump in the recovered levels of the M2 type of ABC compared to CON-67, wherein for the first time the M2 level had reached a fraction over 1 unit (prior to CON-66 it was stable at c.0.34u). At CON-68 the level of the M2 type of ABC achieved 3 units, which is roughly 1% of the total ABC. See the ABC Saturation Report by Major Kira Lewis (RGHQ-51). Special effort must be made to collect air, water, soil and foliage samples, plus Enemy Prisoners of War (EPW), during OPERATION LOSECOAT FIELD, as it will have been in excess of eight months since data was last collected. EPW's are also vital to the ABC recovery program, without which we will eventually have no medical supplies or munitions.

The precautionary principal dictates that CON-72 will be subject to the EXTREME ABC Protection Protocol, as levels are expected to be dangerously high off world. Note that it will be necesary for all exterior gear to be removed for decontamination immediately upon return from off world missions, to ensure personal and collective safety post flight - WITHOUT EXCEPTION! A room has been specially adapted for this purpose. CON-72 will like CON-68 before it conclude with a 10 day mandatory "lock down" pending a full medical and equipment inspection/decontamination at each of our operational facilities. We at Gatewatch apologise for the inconvenience and thank you for your co-operation in maintaining bio-security.

Alerts & Special Orders

1. AREA-52, the regular US SG base is no longer off-line and normal flight operations are expected to commence as of 07/31/2008 and their contribution to CON-72. AREA-50, the former CLEGG base is at this time, off line, likewise BASE-53 in France. The Russian Federation's fasility at SITE-54 is fully operational, however no AREA-52 personnel will be operating from there during CON-72, as was done during CON-68. BASE-53 in France is well on it's way to reactivation, and it is hoped that normal operations will recommence during either CON-73 or CON-74 later this year.

2. The US CLEGG ("CONTACT Long Endurance Gate Group") program remains suspended, and all recorded team members have been recovered and accounted for. Caution is advised if approached off-world by anyone claiming to be CLEGG team members, as they will probably be compromised, either due to enemy action or as afunction of their initial insertion date.

3. In addition to the strategic objectives established by the current situation, namely, Project Midguard, and the on going issues arising from Fort Apache (VXC105), the recovery of the missing UNMC Engineers from the 51St Regiment, for enterogation iand processing, s a high priority objective. These 27 personnel remain listed as MIA as of CON-68. The unit's default Authentication Code is "ANGEL", but bearing in mind how long they have been off-world, it is highly unlikely that any of them remain uncontaminated.

4. During the specified times (see chart) of CON-72, the SSI Inc. engineers can, upon receipt of a written authorisation from the base's S3 (Operations Officer), deliver via the authorised channels, i.e. the base's senior Service officer (BGEN Courtney), program the XAD1471 system for a launch and a retreval flight to/from G-0799 (aka C068W), the location of FORT BIFROST. NB: the XAD1471 system will only function during a standard Gate cycle period (circa 3 days in 60), and require circa 24 hours of pre flight charging. The Ground Crew can then force the Gate to open to or from G-0799 and RGHQ-51 respectively. It can only be safely used by prior arrangement at a specified time or when the inter-planetary comunications systems are working adequately, so that an authorised request by the off-world team can be processed to activate the Gate and open the iris to ensure a safe landing. A 35+ minute window of opportunity is required in the natural Gate cycle to allow for flight time, and the earlier the Gatewatch crew are advised of an intended launch or recovery mission the safer it will be for the SG team. NB: the short notice given by the surviving Engineers (OPERATION WINCHESTER, CON-68), resulted in losses during their return flight.

5. The function and size of FORT BIFROST has been reassessed, and it has been down graded from a Fire Base to a Patrol Base. The clearing originally made for the base, is now going to be developed for agrecultural production of ethonol (aka bio-fuel) for use by Midguard. This means that the workload in it's development will be much reduced, as the agrecultural element will not be our responsibility. However Ft. Bifrost's construction is now to proceed with concealment as the prerequisit feature. A second smaller complex serving as a back up outpost within UHF radio range of Ft. Bifrost, is also to be constructed. In addition a set of entirely new Patrol Bases, one per Spline, is also to be built. Completion has been scheduled for no later than 05/15/2009, location TBA. Therefore all recon missions must incorporate a survey of potential sites during future operations, until as such time a location or locations are selected.

6. With reference to the unauthorised message tagged to the computer readable edition of the GATEWATCH report for OPERATION WINCHESTER (CON-68), it has as yet not been possible to locate it's point of entry on to the RGHQ-51 intrenet. This system is a "stand alone" network, and therefore any additions must have been made within the confines of RGHQ-51. ALL personnel are reminded to maintain maximum vigilance with regard to preventing unauthorised access to the base and the use of it's intrenet and other systems. Copy of original text:

"MESSAGE: WARNING, BE ADVISED that FORT BIFROST is ACTING AS BAIT IN an INTERDICTION MISSION TO BE CONDUCTED BY UNSGC SPECIAL FORCES operating OUT OF THE ALAMO*, FOR (or on behalf of) MIDGUARD DB**. MESSAGE ENDS."

*FYI: Unofficial sources advise that the reference The Alamo, is the Top Secret codename for the US Fire Base, forming part of the Midguard defences, along with Ft. Bifrost. Intel.Evaluation = B2
**FYI: You are reminded that during the Intelligence Conference it was suggested that the signiture "DB" is possibly a reference to Deep Black, the codename for the suspected informal coalition of terestrial national intelligence assets, who's actions in the past have been both friendly and hostile to the CONTACT program. Their true nature and remit remain unknown at this time, and therefore until we achieve clarity, their actions constitute a clear and present danger to the program, and it's personnel. Their operatives should be treated as hostile combatants, and if possible taken as EPW's for subsequent interrogation.

7. Be advised that Lieutenant Colonel James T. Law has been recalled from his assignment as the Commanding Officer of BASE-56 in New Zealand, to resume his position as the UNSGC Auditor. In which capasity he is being reassigned to RGHQ-51 for the remainder of the current tour, to conduct an investigation of personnel performance, procedures, security, etc., and it is required that ALL RGHQ-51 operatives cooperate with his investigations. An abridged edition of his report will be made available at the next Intelligence Conference, scheduled for 02/13/2009 (CON-075), subject to UNSGCHQ adjudication.

Note: Where personnel serve at the same rank, their seniority in the chain of command has been determined firstly by the holding of specific posts, then a comparison between their Promotional Points and their level of training (Expert Infantry Course Units & Battle Practise Units). New personnel, that is, Privates (Grade 1 - PV1), Specialists and Civilians, have had their seniority determined first by whether they are military, trained or untrained civilians, and secondly by date of enlistment. This latter point is for all practical purposes a pure administrative decision. In the field natural leadership skills would be more important, presuming that it should ever become relevant. Officers on Attachment serve in an advisory capasity only, and those listed in Services have authority with regard to base management and security issues only.

GATEWATCH Chart

GATEWATCH reports that as of 15:00Z there are a total of 107 fully developed inbound and outbound wormholes for CON-72. Of these only 20, as specified below have useful Outbound and Inbound Gates, thus making them relevant to UNMC Flight Crews. FYI this is a significant increase over the 51 total activations of CON-68, and like that operation there are no outstanding unresolved signal spikes at this time.

Mission 1

Intelligence Summary: Standard arborial world, wooded with small, apparently uninhabited village. 3 contacts found, engaged and brought back for transferral to Porton Down along with 1 canteen containing Tequila (see DSTL report).

Mission Brief: Brief given but not submitted.

Mission Debrief: Conducted by Gen Courtney.

Outbound gate was rough, but not outside current experience. King had a collision with something during outbound transit and damaged her nose. Squads arrived and took up defence position 25 – 30 mtrs from the gate. RV point was not good cover and terrain was standard arboreal world with brambles, long grass and woodland. No other in flight injuries but may be damage to Gravatometer. Once established the squads moved off towards the woods to find a better position whist Kelly dealt with King. King was declared ok for mission. During this move there was a gate activation, approx 22.20, inbound. Squads were on the move when gate activated and took cover in the woods and heard someone who appeared to be very drunk. All round defence was taken. Contact arrived and squads let them walk in and then went white lightwhilst issuing a challenge. Contact had a canteen and a pistol and did not seem to be aware that there were people in the woods till the squads identified themselves. The contact dropped her weapon and fell over whilst being searched. Contact appeared depressed and said that she had had enough, was fed up and things were upside down. She stated that she had tequila. Ward searched the Contact, asked her name and tied her up. Unsure of name possibly Rose or Rosetta….Kelly thinks she heard Jess.

There was another gate activation at this point, possibly 10 mins later, not sure, and a further 2 contacts appeared. They were shouting with lights on and seemed to be looking for someone. First one had a rifle or carbine. Squads were on the tree line. The 2 contacts seemed to respond to the captured contact on the ground. Sackville-West engaged the second 2 contacts with white light at 2 – 3 mtrs and challenges were issued. Sackville-West states that they ‘twitched’ their weapons so he opened fire. Frost, Ward and Lee also fired. Both contacts went down but Lee sustained an injury, could have been a blue on blue ricochet as no one was standing behind private Lee. At this point someone shot the first prisoner, unknown who. She was making lots of noise. No one asked the prisoners any questions. The 2 new contacts were searched by Ward and Lee whilst Frost provided over-watch. All round defence was maintained. The first contact had a carbine and the second had an assault rifle. Sackville-West stated that if they had put their guns down at the point he challenged them then he would not have fired on them. All in the room are satisfied that they were given ample warning. Well seems to think that these second 2 may have been slightly inebriated too, this cannot be verified at this time, as they were acting like they were looking for a friend on a Saturday night. No other equipment, just NBC suites and rifles. First captive had only a canteen and a pistol. Well advises that this seems like they were lost people who turn up occasionally and get infected through being left on world. The female had badges on her uniform.

One everyone had settled down they had 3 prisoners. Sackville-West did not want to spilt up as they needed people to bring back the prisoners. Samples were taken, water, soil and vegetation.  Well was on perimeter and saw some buildings. Seemed to be a village, 10 +buildings with no roofs, made of a corrugated material in bad condition. Sackville-West did not allow the prisoners to be revived as he was worried about manpower and Kelley was worried that they were reanimating quicker than normal. The female seemed to be trying to get to the bottle hat she had stated contained Teuila and all seemed to reanimate in sequence, female first – possibly in the order they were shot. Kelley and King watched the prisoners whilst the others scouted. Squads thought they heard something in the woods but nothing found. Frost states he heard something heavy hitting one of the buildings and some oil drums being hit, possibly another contact, Ward also heard this but no one saw anything. Frost also heard a single shot fired and King also thought she heard this. No tracer or muzzle flash seen but Frost states he heard gun and projectile hit also, King things she may have heard both these also but isn’t sure. Frost states this did not sound like an AEG, maybe a sniper or single action gun.

Squads now moved back to the gate with Ward and Frost at the head of the teams.  Prisoners were unconscious but Sackville-West states there was a lot of background noise. At 15 mins to gate time personel were organised so that Frost and Ward were first. 1 person was allocated per prisoner and everyone moved to the Gate area. No contact at gate. Gate opened and all personnel enter transit. During transit a prisoner was lost and Frost, who was last through the gate, ended up in the place of the lost prisoner, second in line. King states that she does not think she ever lost her grip on her prisoner. All present agree that this seems like a fair summary of the mission.

Conclusions: Well suspects that the contacts were ‘lost sheep’. They have met drunk people before (French and Americans). As if they are trying to fend off the effects of the ‘taint’. Interesting the prisoner trying to go towards the bottle of tequila, Possibly. Casualties did not seem to be as badly affected by the mk7 ammo as previous casualties. Could be due to blood alcohol level. Note: for observations on future missions, behaviour of enemy.

The exit from the gate was interrupted with an injury to King, myself and Ward scouted down from the Star-gate to locate an area for king to get proper treatment. We found an entrance into some woods and formed a perimeter whilst Kelly treated Kings injury. The Star-gate activated and a figure started down the track, the figure appeared to be inebriated and was singing (off key). We allowed the person to approach within approx 3 meters and she was challenged, after the challenge she seemed confused and was waving a pistol and a canteen around (this was apparently filled with Tequila.  She was disarmed and tied up but was still singing, at this point the star-gate again activated and 2 people began moving down the hill These were shouting a name and searching for someone, they again moved within 3 meters and were challenged. The point mans M4 was seen to rise after  the challenge and at that point we opened fire and subdued them both, the female was also shot during the engagement. The bodies were policed and I scouted a small village, the bodies were then moved to a secured building. During and after the move several large impacts were heard on the wall of a building approx 20 meters up from our location. As we were ex-filtrating I heard an impact at a set of oil drums 5 meters from our location, shortly after I heard a single shot and impact. We then moved to the gate and waited for activation. The return trip was difficult and we lost a prisoner in the mix as bodies were knocked around.

Attended the mission briefing where we found out which team we would be on, what the mission was and the gate outbound and inbound.

When we starbursted from the gate, we were in a different order of March, also I had banged into something and had broken my nose.  Luckily Kelly was on hand to sort me out.  After a 5 minute break, we made our way to the rv point, by this time the gate had reactivated and we had to find cover fast.

Unfortunately due to my injury, I didn’t take part as fully as I should, so only heard bits and pieces, what I did see and hear was somebody singing off key as if drunk.  By the time the person got to us, we were all quiet, then somebody said "unsgc, identify yourself", they didn't answer after the 5,4,3,2, they put their weapons down.  Then the gate went again and 2 more people came through, they made their way down to us.

Next thing I know, they were not putting there weapons down and everyone opened fire and there were injuries and Kelly was needed.  I was then put on perimeter check, where I stayed until requested to do prisoner watch with Kelly.

By the time we returned, we had 3 prisoners, when we came out of the wormhole I had lost my prisoner.

Mission 2

Intelligence Summary:C Gate on site know formerly as the New Greenham Common base. Flight scrambled troop order and was rough. 2 bunker/trench complexes found and multiple contacts made and engaged. 1 prisoner sucessfully retrieved and sent to Porton Down for further tests (see DSTL report).

Mission Brief: Brief given but not submitted.

Mission Debrief: Conducted by Cpt Aitken

Alpha Team: Maj Sackville-West, 1st Sgt Kelly, Pvt Ray, Msgt Well.
Bravo team: SFC Ward, 2Lt King, Pvt Tuma, Pvt Lee, Maj Frost.

Flight conditions rough, arrival was in a slightly different order to take off but no injuries during flight. Planet normal Arborial world with light rain. No science kit deployed as designated combat mission. Not a perfect deployment, possibly due to the gate travel mix up. Transit ended at the bottom of a low hill and the squads moved up to the top of the hill in a skirmish line. A bunker complex was visible on the skyline and Alpha was assigned to bunker clearance with Bravo for support. The bunker was found empty and an all round defence was set up.

As the squads were moving out to the bottom of the hill they heard ‘tango’ followed by weapons fire in their direction, King was injured in the arm. Squads identified themselves but were still fired at so both squads moved out of sight and had a discussion. Bravo squad moved off to the bottom of the hill whilst Alpha stayed at the top of the hill out of sight and then moved forward to support the Bravo squad.

All both squads could see of the enemy were a couple of hats over a parapet. Bravo swept in and the targets seemed to be firing less and less. They then moved up, took out one hostile and then put a grenade into the room, this delt with the remaining hostiles. Contacts had no distinguishing markings,  one of them was not wearing camouflage pants but was wearing a desert camo jacket. Once contacts were secure they were tied up by Lee and the second bunker was cleared, Kit bag with lots of ammo found. No challenges issues during this as both squads were being fired upon. Some of Bravo did a reconnaissance of the forest around but no other signs of human life. There were signs of animal life.

Prisoners were taken to the top of the hill and then all moved back to the Gate. All personel moved through the gate at activation with 2 people on point and 2 at the rear with the prisoners in the middle. Deployment re arranged during transit again with 2 bodies successfully brought back. The last reanimated and escaped back through the gate upon re entry.

We gated out with beta in the lead, unfortunately the gate travel jumbled us up again!  I was at the back when we got out (3rd from the front when entering the gate).

We starbursted with alpha to the right and beta to the left.  Once the gate was secure, beta took point with alpha bringing up the rear.  About 10 mins into the mission Frost and Lee came upon a bunker defence system.

After clearing the bunker, frost noticed another bunker system further down and saw 2 heads peeking out of the top.  We heard what sounded like tango being shouted, we then returned with unsgc.  This brought on gun fire, where once again I got shot in the wrist!

Once the gun fire stopped well and Sackville west decided that beta would take the left flank keeping to the trees and alpha would be the targets.  This worked fine, until we came upon yet another trench system, this time Frost and Lee cleared the trench, then frost carried on with me behind going to the main trench.  By this time ward and lee had got the prisoner secured.

Once the trench was secure, we set up an all round defence, it was then decided to move all the prisoners up to the top trench, once this was done and everyone had rv'ed.  Ward and I were given the order to take point back to the gate, with the prisoners had 3 escorts.  Once back at the gate an all round defence was taken until the gate opened.

I was the second group through with a prisoner partnered with Lee.  Unfortunately once back on the other side of the gate the order of March was changed yet again.

Mission 3

Intelligence Summary: Standard arborial world designated unexplored ex-colony. No previous details. Gate site by an abandoned village like area. Multiple contacts made and engaged, possibly Type 1's and 2's. 3 bodies retrieved along with an aluminium case later found to contain Uranium slugs of the type previously retrieved from offworld see DSTL report and Other Related Documents section at the bottom of this page for images of the case and contents. Type 2 prisoner killed using On-world weapon upon return to base. gravatometer readings and samples taken (see DSTL report).

Mission Brief: Brief given but not submitted.

Mission Debrief: Debrief performed by Cpt Aitken.

Recon mission. Flight conditions were very good and all squads arrived together and in the right order. Gate was in front of a ditch, rough terrain with piles of wood in front of the gate. Squads proceeded with all round defence.

Alpha – Sackville-West, Kelly, Well

Bravo – Frost, Fox, Ray, McReady

Not a perfect dispersal. Gate located with a bridge across a small stream just in front. Up a slope there were lots of structures with no roofs, possibly abandoned or a training facility of some kind. Slope went down to a small stream and then back up into woods. Squads crossed the stream and swept up the woods in a full diamond formation. No incidents and personel were eventually stopped by impenetrable undergrowth. Gravatometer was deployed and Science kit was taken on mission.

Squads turned and went back to where they began. Upon arrival they heard a gate activation and a lone figure seen 30 – 40 mtrs away moving through the woods, carrying a silver case. After a while he was challenged by Bravo squad and there was an exchange of fire. Bravo then withdrew and the case was taken. When both squads regrouped they decided to take the body too. Alpha retrieved the body which was dressed in northern european camo with an assault rifle but had no patches, logo’s  or spare ammo. No intel retrienved from the body. The case was not opened at this time. Approx 10 mins later another person came through the Gate shouting ‘Alberto’. This contact was more military in appearance than the first, wearing a desert top and non uniform pants. There was a dialogue and a challenge was given followed by an exchange of fire. Frost and Fox were there but do not know who fired first, believe that it was the hostile. Hostile was neutralised, searched and then placed with the first hostile.

A short while later here was another gate activation and the contact that emerged engaged the squads straight away.  There were casualties in the party and this individual was a lot more feisty and was wearing British pattern camouflage. This seemed to be a type 2 as it was not behaving as though the MK 7 ammo was having an effect. Frost was injured during the exchange of fire before this third hostile was incapacitated and tied up and hands and feet. A guard was posted. The squads were tactically stretched having personnel over a large area and Frost did not get immediate medical attention. Squads did not have radios. Frost was eventually patched up and all bodies were moved to nearer the gate inside a structure. All round defence was taken up and squads waited for Gate time. The type 2 seemed to be trying to look at people’s wrists, possibly trying to rupture the NBC suites.

Travel back was not good, very rough. Sackville-West’s weapon discharged during transit and there were injuries. One of the  type 1’s reanimated and the type 2 reanimated upon return to base and was killed using an on world weapon.

Mission 4

Intelligence Summary: Standard arborial world designated visited ex-colony. See CON's 60.4, 33.5 and 21.1 for previous visits. Multple contacts found and engaged. No casualties and no prisoners taken.

Mission Brief: Brief given but not submitted.

Mission Debrief:
Alpha squad – Sackville-West, Lewis, Law, King
Bravo squad – Frost, Kelley, Johanssen, Ward.

Conducted by Cpt Aitken.

Flight conditions very good. Squads exited the gate in the order they entered, deployed left and right.  No scientific equip taken. Standard Arborial world with the Gate by a stream at the bottom of the slope. A number of barricades seen in the woods, very crude in appearance. Frost did a quick sweep and the squads moved into the woods for about 30 – 40 mtrs. Frost Spotted a red light in the woods, to the left flank, at a distance and reported it over the radio. Light seemed to be moving generally towards the squads but erratically. This was then confirmed by other members of Bravo squad along with other white lights. Time was about 10 mins to Gate departure. Squads pulled back. Red light was a gate walker that seemed to be moving back and forth looking at the ground. Didn’t head straight for the gate but squads did not engage as it walked through our position with approx 3 mins to go till gate time. Wearing camo gear. Weapon hung round its neck.

More movement seen up the hill coming in to the right flank. Some small fire from hostiles in the distance and possibly shouting from them, could not tell what was said.

Both squads formed a defensive perimeter around the gate. Movement and noise to the top of the hill showed that squads were being flanked. Just before the Gate opened, 2 contacts moving down the hill from the right flank opened fire. Believe that one of them may have been hit during return fire. Squads fell back tactically and were right on top of the gate. Suppression continued whilst gate egress took place. Gate travel was smooth, no turbulence, exited the gate in the same order we entered it. No casualties, no prisoners.

Frost did engage the white lights during the original contact. No challenge was issued and it is possible the second engagement was caused by this.

Starburst from the gate with Alpha going left and Beta going right, Lt Col Law and Maj Lewis took up a defensive position against a wall of trees, while Maj Sackville-West & I covered the bottom area near the gate.  Meanwhile Beta led by Frost done a circuit working their way to the top of the ridge.

While Beta where looking they spotted a light that kept flashing, Alpha was informed and we kept an eye out.  About 2/3rds of the mission Sackville-West spotted a light coming from the left of our position, Beta had reached our point and a shot was heard.  Beta tried to make contact with the approaching hostiles but with no success, they still kept coming.

One hostile started to approach mine and Sackville-West’s position, the major told me to keep an eye on the hostile but not to fire as it appeared to be a type 3 as it was looking on the ground taking no notice of us, he was also talking to himself.  By this time, it was time to make our way back to the gate, we had Lewis and Law laying down covering fire, which worked, the rest of us took up a defensive position while keeping an eye on the hostile near the gate.  As soon as the gate opened we dived through.

Mission 5

Intelligence Summary: Standard arborial world. 2 contacts found and spoken to. No prisoners taken. Contacts looking for a person named Vosloo lost in an engagement with a type 3 and agreed to further amicable discussion with Sg teams if encountered again. Password set up. Samples returned – flint pieces, soil, air, water (see DSTL report).

Mission Brief: Brief given but not submitted.

Mission Debrief: Performed by Cpt Aitken.

Pathfinder mission. Gate out was smooth and dispersal was good, personel arrived in the same order they left. Gate was situated in a rocky area by a low field with underbrush to the left and a forest. LtCol Law took his squad and patrolled, samples were taken using all round defence for protection. Squads moved in a line down a game trail and followed the paths down a stream about 10 mtrs to the left. Terrain was a small valley in open woods, undergrowth, not heavily forested with signs of small animals. Once at the top of the rise the squads turned and began to move back but not along the same path.

Approx 20 – 30 mtrs on a contact was sighted up ahead. Squads move nearer the Gate and mounted all round defence with the gate as a base. LtCol Law’s squad went to investigate and another 2 contacts were spotted to the 9 o’clock of the Gate. All squads pulled back to the gate. LtCol Law was closest to the contacts but Sackville-West heard a voice that seemed to contain the word ‘fire’ - as there were incoming rounds he fired back and the targets may have been hit. The contacts were 5 – 10 mtrs down slope and were asked to identify themselves, they asked the same back. Law advised his squad not to fire and he went to meet one of the contacts on neutral ground. Contacts colleague was wounded and more understandably more hostile but stated that they had no problem with the squads. Both contacts were wearing camo, the first was UK pattern and was carrying a short G36, the other unidenfitied camo and was wounded in the leg and bandaged. Law identified himself by name but not rank an the first contact gave his name as Jones. He seemed to know the squads were SGC and asked what we were doing on the world.

He seemed interested that this was a pathfinder mission to us and identified himself and his colleague as belonging to an ‘Independent organisation based off world’. He stated that they were looking for a person called ‘Vosloo’ in an SG team and that this person went missing off world, was recovered and then went missing again. They were apparently ‘bounced’ by a type 3 2 nights previous and it was during this time that the lost contact with Vosloo. The first contact seemed to have no problem with the Sg team being on world and when asked if they would speak to us again the second hostile was not happy but the first one stated that this was not his decision and that the request would be passed down the line. Law stated that he would do the same, password set up: Identifier word batwing, reply hamster.

After this it was agreed that all would call it a day and that our personel would retreat to the Gate and mount a defence, if the contacts engaged the SG team then they would be fired upon. The contacts stated that they were moving away in the opposite direction, all shook hands and parted company though the contacts did not move far away, they were not hostile. Gate time was reached and as the squads were making their way through the gate Ward thinks she heard gunfire.

Samples returned – flint pieces, soil, air, water.

Outbound Gate: smooth, no re-arrangement of entry order.

Terrain: shallow valley, lightly wooded, stream running through.

Entered through GATE, took up ARD.
Proceeded to stream to collect samples, then crossed over the stream to far side of valley. Patrolled in a circular route.
As we closed on the gate we spotted one unknown heading away from us, we were not seen.
Proceeded with caution to gate, Alpha team secured gate and Bravo team set out to locate unknown.
Located two unknowns, Bravo returned to the GATE. Challenged unknowns to identify themselves and took incoming fire as a response.

After several attempts achieved a cease fire and opened a dialogue with unknowns.
They were not overly hostile, both in camo with SMG/ assault rifles. One had a leg wound.
They said they worked for an independent off world organisation and were looking for a colleague who had become separated from them two or three nights before during a type three attack. They named him as Vosloo. They also recognised the term ‘Pathfinder’.
We left them on good terms due to imminent departure time with a challenge and response for any future meetings. Due to elapsed time I cannot remember either.

Inbound Gate: smooth, no re-arrangement of entry order.

Target Gate ID#: G-0404

Starbursted from the gate with Alpha going right and Beta going left, when all was secure Beta went first in a single line Law, Ward, Sackville-West and me watching our six.  Halfway down the slope we found a stream and as per instructions Ward took samples with the rest of us taking a defensive position.  Once we had collected the samples we carried on.

The terrain was almost earth like with hills and dips, we climbed one such hill full of vegetation and at the top waited to see if we could see anything, nothing, so continued on.  Unfortunately due to the vegetation shadows were spotted and it wasn’t until we were closer that we realised it was a shadow!

As we made our way back to the gate, Lt Col Law spotted someone in the trees, we then hurried to find cover, Law and Ward made there way down to try and communicate with the hostiles, in the meantime Sackville-West and I were further up the hill keeping a bead on the other hostile standing by the tree.  For some reason only known to himself Sackville-West opened fire, the hostiles then retaliated thankfully nobody was injured on our side!  There was one casualty on the other side though.  In the lull Law was calling for a cease fire to they could talk and Sackville-West was calling as well so it was chaos, Law then ordered Sackville-West to shut-up, which he did.  Lt Col Law then met one of the hostiles in the middle.

The Lt Col was given a time check and he concluded his talks with the hostiles, he then rejoined us and we made our way back to the gate where we took up a defensive position, while waiting he gave has bits of an important message to relay back at HQ if he was captured.  Unfortunately due to the lateness of this report I am unable to remember what the sentence was.

Once the gate was opened we gated back, with no injuries and no prisoners.
