Mission 1

Intelligence Summary: Original notes by Capt. J Jameson: Gate site in wooded area, weather cold, damp, autumnal. Supply dump was found west of the gate and a set of structures. Dilapidated base was found approx. 200m N/NE of the gate area. Buildings were seen to the S/E including a comms tower with wire.

Contact mission report 23-25/11/2001

23/11/01.

Arrived on base at 5.00pm. Reported to Captain Jameson and began the set up for the weekend’s operational cycle. Brig Gen Courtney gave his usual pre operation speech and the gate schedule was delivered from Gatewatch. Capt Jameson and myself got down to working out and classifying the weekend gate operations. All gate times were recorded and posted for general viewing. The Portondown report was delivered and put in a safe place. Dinner was served and Intel got down to the serious work of dredging the archives for any intelligence on the two-way gate planets. Msgt Vosloo ran a series of training missions during the evening. Due to a very early gate the next morning SG-16 were briefed late that night.

24/11/01

Mission One.

C098B
06.35 – 07.35
Destroyed off world command post. 42 personnel (MIA).
Possible supply cache on planet.
Primary mission – locate and recover supply cache and any Intel

Team assigned – 2Lt Castle (SG-16) 2ic, Mne Landers (SG-16), Mne Scholefield (SG-16), Mne Daniels (SG-16), Mne Garibaldi (SG-16), Mne Ulrich (SG-16), Mne Webb (SG-17), Mne Briggs, Dr Reynolds (Science), Dr Well (MID).

Mission Debrief
Lt Castle and Mne Landers reporting

Found a cache of capacitors, gas masks and Geiger counters. Also located a fortified building and some kind of communications tower. No sign of human life, but animal, avian and plant life in abundance. Lt Castle felt he did not have enough time to conduct a proper search and felt that he did not locate the primary cache. Science samples were taken and everyone returned to RGHQ 51. Capt Jameson felt that the mission was a success. The team brought back a small sample of the cache they did locate and said that they had destroyed the rest to deny them to the enemy (see DSTL report).

Contact mission report 23-25/11/2001

SG-16 & SG-17 present.
This was an unusual mission weekend for me as I was unwell and thus unable to fully participate in as many missions as usual.

Training - Friday evening

*Ran a series of simple assaults to practice fire & maneuver on the emergency fire escape from the car park hill. The assaults started off quite shaky and non-commital, but got more confident and aggressive as the exercise was repeated.
*Marine Webb performed rather well as NCO in charge of the assaulters, well enough that both Col Law and myself agreed we should put him forward for promotion to LCpl.
*SG16 declined field training and had classroom training instead, on fire & maneuver and buddy teaming I believe.

Alerts

More info re the missing trio from PD - they're now a full quartet, looks like someone helped them escape.

Mission 1 – C098B – Sat 06/10/2001 – 06:53-07:35

Unable to join this mission as only a couple of personnel were needed from SG-17 and it made sense to skip it and save my strength. Report has been compiled from interviews with personnel on the mission.

Mission personnel

SG-16, Lt Castle commanding

Mission objectives

Recon old base - collect kit & intel.

Mission protocols

Recon mission, treat with care.

Description

Working from a document giving the location of a base and a supply cache the team spent a significant amount of time planning the route to take once on planet. As I understand it the plan was to shortcut the instructions given in the document.

Very dark and quiet on gate exit. Team found it difficult to navigate and maneuver.

Although they don't appear to have found the base they did find some stuff (albeit a little worse for wear), possibly the remains of the cache.

Intel

None.

Doctrine

N/A.

Suggestions

Might there have been an advantage to sending part of the team along the given route and seeing where they met?

Lt T. Castle, SG16, 51st Peacekeeper Division

Gate Operations 23-Nov-2001 - 25-Nov-2001

United Nations Marine Corps

SG16 deployed to location GHQ 51 on Friday 23 November 2001 for the weekend mission cycle. Present for the team was the newly promoted 2nd Lt Castle, recently demoted Marine Landers and Marines Daniels, Garibaldi, Ulrich and Schofields.

As always morale was high and the team had, by and large, done a fair amount of squad level training which gave them significant confidence - myself and Landers would form a support/command element and the other a fire team with assigned pairs. This training, combined with a high esprit de corps, led to an overall feeling of confidence - and an average of 12 mags per man didn't hurt either!

On the evening SG16 had classroom training on fire and manouevre and anti ambush drills.

Mission 1:

This was an early morning mission to C818B - we were ordered that this was a diplomatic mission and not to initiate a firefight. The primary purpose was recon to find a lost arms cache, secondly was Intel from a 'lost' base and finally we were to obtain science samples. I was mission commander and SG16 was reinforced by SG17 and science and Intel personnel.
The mission briefing was the night before and unfortunately was contradictory as to the location of the cache from the ruined base. It has since been mentioned a document contained a full instruction on how to find one from the other but certainly all concerned left the briefing somewhat confused as to the location of one from the other!

The mission went well in that the abandoned base was located but nothing of any worth was located although some items were brought back. Scientific samples were taken (see DSTL report). It was difficult to see due to weather conditions but eventually a store of Geiger counters, blankets and tarps were located - it is not known whether this was the cache we were looking for [or remains of it] or another one - in any event some samples were brought back so we could run the serial numbers and the rest destroyed by Landers' fire and my brute strength.

All personnel returned intact despite the threat of booby traps.

Descriptions

Training Mission 1

Myself & Dr Stokes were in the role of neutrals - miners from a forgotten colony who were under continual threat from feral colonists. Our job was to make peaceful contact with the team, if possible, once we had observed them for a while and were sure they weren't a threat.

Team very careful with maneuvering until came into contact range of my group. At this stage they froze up, obviously waiting for something, later found out it was a combination of a comms issue and an orders issue - orders were to inform command group of any contacts but they couldn't make contact with the command group via radio and the command group was looking away from them.

After a few minutes of staring at one another across a clearing there was a disturbance behind them. Shortly afterwards they moved away without attempting to put cover between them and us, must have decided (correctly) that we weren't a threat.
Team was overwhelmed and destroyed by a numerically inferior force that had speed, surprise & focused firepower going for it.

Suggestions

Team was too split up for their comms. Team leaders should try stay to maintain visual contact with other members of the team.

Training Mission 2

Neutrals running from attackers seeking protection.
Team eventually came to the aid of the poor colonists, but not until two were down. Attackers then successfully pinned the team down. No coordinated attempt to break out or take the initiative. Most attempts at action involved sending colonists out and then calling them back when they came under too intense fire.

Doctrine

Buddy teams fell apart. One member of the team was down for five minutes before their absence was noted.

Suggestions

Team needed to take the initiative. Aggressive action might have relieved some of the pressure from them.

***NEXT REPORT***

Lt T. Castle, SG16, 51st Peacekeeper Division

Gate Operations 23-Nov-2001 - 25-Nov-2001

United Nations Marine Corps

This was a training mission designated T001. Primary purpose was reactivating a lost ore colony. Secondary was securing diplomatic relations with cut off miners and thirdly was science samples.

The firm instruction was to use force as a last resort and not initiate fire. SG16 were out in full force with the fire team in front and myself and Landers forming a command element with Dr Well of Intel and Dr Reynolds of science. It would appear Intel was a shambles on this mission. The fire team spotted some miners but due to comms being out couldn't raise me. Just as this was sorted out 6-8 hostiles [who were not mentioned in briefing] ran at us. The team held fire as per orders until the hostiles got so close they were over-run . I scored some hits but due to the adrenalin rush and the low velocity training ammo it was not felt by the inexperienced member of aggressor force - Landers later reported the same problem .The command element then fell .

Basically we fell for our rules of engagement - the team followed them to the letter and were wiped out as a result. The mission was then re-done. As we exited the gate area we saw the colonists engaged by the hostiles. By the time we had established who was who they had taken casualties so we started the long labourious process of recovering casualties back the gate area. This was a tough mission as the enemy weapons out ranged ours - curse those P90 models - and they had loads of ammo. Also for every enemy we killed more appeared. Garibaldi was wounded on the way back to the perimeter and played dead as the enemy moved close the team moved back to get him - Landers being hit in the head [again] and Daniels showing great gallantry in slowly sneaking forward to rescue him spending 10 min under fire. All casualties were recovered by the end as ammo dwindled - further casualties were suffered as an enemy appeared in our midst.

Despite what has been said I was very proud of the team in this mission - all displayed courage and faith in the buddy buddy system - Garibaldi only being left behind as he was hit in a full sprint. We successfully recovered the colonists and brought them home - one uninjured I believe and all team members made it back leaving approx 12-15 enemy dead on battlefield. Given the close proximity of the gate a defensive perimeter around it was the only sensible move when combat was initiated.

Mission 3

Intelligence Summary: Original notes by Capt. J Jameson: Standard arborial world. 1 Team member disappeared mid transit, gate behavior unusual during transit. Multiple contacts made.

After Action Reports:

PVT G Woods, 51 MID, RGHQ-51

Contact mission report 23-25/11/2001

Mission Three.

P165
14.38 – 16.32
Unexplored World – three SG operatives had reconed the planet during Operation Torrington.
Primary mission – recon in force. Protect Dr Lancaster.
Secondary mission – Science.

Team assigned - 2Lt Castle (SG-16), 2ic Mne Landers (SG-16), Mne Scholefield (SG-16), Mne Daniels (SG-16), Mne Garibaldi (SG-16), Mne Ulrich (SG-16), Msgt Vosloo (SG-17), Corp Vorsfeldt (SG-17), Mne Webb (SG-17), Mne Hawk (SG-17), Mne Hunt (SG-17), SO Ash (science), Dr Carter (science), Dr Sarah Lancaster (mission specialist).

Immediately after the team left for the planet Dr Stokes found a note claiming to be from Clegg 20. It contained information on the reanimators. It was also ascertained that for a period of ten minutes Dr Lancaster had been unattended and had chosen to tour the base on her own. Due to the recent Portondown alert it was decided that upon her return, the Doctor should be taken into protective custody until we could get proper confirmation of her credentials. It was also decided that a full sweep of the facility should be conducted. When the team re-emerged from the gate we were told that Dr Lancaster was no longer with them. Apparently she had never arrived at the other gate. SO Ash was injured and Mne Landers was carrying an unidentified package. Apparently they had been suckered by two people they had met on planet who had incapacitated them and injected something into Landers, thus making him act strangely. The pair was taken to med lab and the package shipped to Portondown. (see DSTL report)

Conclusion

The enemy knew that an SG team were coming. They knew enough about our procedures to spin a good story, one that ensured that they would be left lightly guarded. We have a leak inside UNSGC.

***NEXT REPORT***

SO Morticia Ash, 51st Scientific Division

Gate Operations 23-Nov-2001 - 25-Nov-2001

United Nations Scientific Corps

This was my third mission cycle at Base 51. It was the first mission of the cycle for me and I had been told that we were going to go to P165B. Our gate out was at 14.38 hundred hours and the return gate would be at 16.32 hundred hours. The rules of engagement were as usual, not to initiate fire. This mission was to be a recon in force with a science element being provided by Porton Down. They had sent Dr. Sarah Lancaster to join the team, with some  new equipment to be deployed in the field.

Cpt. de Beer had notified me prior to the mission that Dr. Lancaster would be coming. Dr. Lancaster presented herself to me with UNSGC ID confirming her identity and security clearance. She turned out to be a young likeable woman who had no idea about the conditions offworld. I was shocked at her naivete and wondered why this appalling lack of preparation had been allowed? Fortunately, while I was unable to persuade her to carry a sidearm, she did agree to change her white laboratory coat for some more suitable attire. This came as a big relief to SG16 who were not looking forward to escorting such an obvious target. Just prior to us going offworld she asked if she could be excused for a smoke break and after checking that she had been orientated to the base I let her go off. I myself am not a smoker and avoid it as much as possible.
Our gate transit out was weird. More so than usual, because as we came through the other side Dr. Lancaster was no longer with me. I can only put this down to her being misplaced in the wormhole by some outside force, like a black hole. I suspect that she has been catapulted forward in time, though we have no way at present of calculating how far. The previous 2 recorded time displacement events were for 30 years and 3 years, which doesn't gives us much of a statistical range to calculate a probable displacement for Dr. Lancaster.

Fortunately, I was carrying the equipment that she had brought along with her. I had received sufficient training in its deployment and operation to complete the mission. So my first actions were to request that we deploy the unit, as there would have to be a 20 minute processing time for gathering the data. Also, the equipment had to be strung out in a line, over a distance of 150 metres, maintaining visual line of sight. This was to allow for the interchange of data through them. We were able to perform the deployment successfully. Meanwhile my colleague Dr. Carter took background radiation readings during this time.

Lt. Castle's team had in the meantime patrolled the surrounding area and had come across 2 unknown contacts. One had been injured and had lost a leg sometime before, but seemed perfectly able to move around. Both had weaponry, which they refused to give up. Their story was that they were the remains of an offworld team that was awaiting a SG team for retrieval. As a consequence of their mission brief they were not allowed to tell us anything. They had been ordered to remove all insignia that would identify them. I tried to open up the dialogue further by mentioning Deep Black, in the hope that they might be another Clegg team. The one legged man was friendly enough, while remaining guarded. The other man however, was surly and sullen when questioned.

Lt. Castle ordered myself and Mne. Landers to accompany the two men back to a safe position as he had been alerted to a possible other contact. While this was going on the pair of us tried to engage and calm down the two men we had taken into our protective custody. They were both quite wired and jittery and very nervous about out teams ability to control the access to the gate. During the firefight both myself and Mne. Landers' attention was drawn away from our two contacts and they used this momentary lack of concentration to knock us both unconscious.

I have no recollection of what happened until I was roused by one of the other members of the team. I can't remember whom either. In fact the rest of the mission was a bit of a blur, but I do remember being angry and anxious. Angry for letting my guard drop and then finding that my weapon had been deactivated. Anxious because something had happened to Mne. Landers' and wondering if anything had been done to me? I appeared to be alright, but who could know. I focussed on keeping the reanimators that SG18 had captured from getting away. I shot any that moved and I shot some just in case they were lying doggo.

On reflection I think that the timing of the attack on myself and Mne. Landers', was a coordinated action between our captives and the rest of the reanimators. I think that their purpose was to subvert one of us and use him or her to infect Base 51. It would seem that someone offworld has got the bright idea of infecting offworld teams from Earth. When we got back both myself and Mne. Landers' were taken to sickbay for a check up by Dr. Stokes. I also understand from Col. Law that there was a breach of security on the base and that Dr. Lancaster may have been involved. My role in this breach was clarified, since I had documentation from Porton Down and proof that Dr. Lancaster had the appropriate security ID. I understand that Mjr. Appleby will be reviewing the SOPs for visiting personnel.

Mission 3 – P165B – Sat 06/10/2001 – 14:38-16:32

Mission personnel

SG-16 & SG-17. Lt Castle commanding.

Mission objectives

Recon in force.
Protect scientists
Scientific experiment

Mission protocols

Recon new planet.

Description

Lost Dr Lancaster, our visiting scientist, on the way there. She left with us, but didn't make it through the gate on the other side (another case of temporal slippage? Or something worse?).

Science experiment forced the team to be far too spread out to be comfortable. Two 'bad guys' posing as SG friendlies (all classified info of course, implying they were part of Deep Black or some such agency, possibly correctly?), claimed they were waiting for an SG team to rescue them. Nailed scientists and used AD456 type device on mne Landers, though we didn’t realize this till much later. They then left by the gate (gate activation was heard) .

Other troops attacked taking out two SG-17 members who were out on a limb while patrolling. Attackers all taken out through coordinated fire.

Lots of chaos when it was discovered mne Landers had some unexpected kit on him. Back at base this turned out to be a large package of ‘gloop’ which was apparently intended for Dr Stokes (see DSTL report).

Intel

Specific targeting of Dr Stokes very worrying.

Doctrine

SG-16 took up defensive positions leaving SG-17 to patrol a very large area. Need all PKD teams to remain maneuverable.

Suggestions

Treat all off-worlders with deep suspicion and keep them covered or observed at all times.

Must resist the tendency to become static.

***NEXT REPORT***

Lt T. Castle, SG16, 51st Peacekeeper Division

Gate Operations 23-Nov-2001 - 25-Nov-2001

United Nations Marine Corps

This was a mission in the early afternoon our time to P165. The rules of engagement were that the natives were prob hostile . Primary was recon in force and guard Dr Lancaster as she took reading. Secondary was scientific samples. We were told a ruined village may be present to search.

After the jump the main plan went to hell as Dr Lancaster failed to arrive. SO Ash said she could set up the equipment so SG16 formed a perimeter around the structure which was abandoned and the equipment while this was done. SG17 under M.Sgt Vosloo patrolled and SO Carter took further reading and samples. A possible contact occurred when 2 individuals approached the perimeter. Vosloo spoke to them and they claimed to be special forces types who could not tell us of their mission but they were on our side and they were wounded. As we were dealing with them reports of a further contact came in - they were placed in the abandoned building under the guard of Landers and Ash while the attack was dealt with - 6 reanimators being disposed of and their bodies recovered.

Unfortunately the 2 sf types used this to jump landers and ash and then went to the gate. Chase was given but not in time . Landers was attacked and Ash was injured . It was only when Landers continued to act more oddly than normal we disarmed him . In a very good call from Daniels he was searched and found to be carrying a contaminant which was supplied to use on Dr stokes on return to base (see DSTL report). The general feeling was the attack was a set up by persons unknown to get the 'gloop' back to base. In any event the mission was completed - landers was back under guard , the science experiments completed and reanimator bodies and weapons recovered but still no sign of Dr Lancaster.

Mission wise it wasn't too tough - SG16 's new tactic of hit and run on reanimators to disable their weapons worked. Not happy landers was jumped though. As to the criticism of being too static - the purpose of the mission was to guard a 50m cable for quite some time so strong defensive positions were needed. SG16 did this while SG17 did clearance patrols. I would do the same tomorrow as the attack was easily beaten off and the science experiment complete. Of more concern was how the 2 sf types knew we were coming!

Mission 4

Intelligence Summary: Original notes by Capt. J Jameson: Standard arborial world, former uncompleted Ore Extraction facility. Team ambushed by hostiles and diverted to a fake gate. Upon activation of the real gate the team were attacked again whilst trying to enter transit. No personnel lost offworld.

Lt Castle, Mne Landers and SO Ash reporting.

The team were ambushed by 2-4 hostiles upon exiting the gate. They lay down suppressive fire whilst SO Ash took necessary readings. They then retreated to the cover of the woods, without confirming any kills on the ambusher’s side. They searched for the out gate in the woods and eventually located what they believed to be the gate on a hillside. The “gate” was guarded by 5 hostiles, which the team duly dispatched with ten minutes to go. They consolidated their position by using the bodies of the hostiles as a barricade. SO Ash took readings.

Close to gate out time one of the bodies reanimated (Castle believes they were standard Reanimaters) and was taken down. At gate return time the gate opened but they were over 300 metres from it. The gate they were guarding was a dummy set up by the enemy to draw them in to an ambush. They ran, carrying their dead, to the real gate and were once again ambushed by at least two people, who fired and threw hand grenades. They made it through the gate with seconds to spare but Mne Landers had been hit by a grenade and was barely conscious upon return and complaining of headaches. He was rushed to med bay and was found to be infected (possibly from the previous mission). Upon questioning by Capt Jameson it was revealed that Mne Landers now remembered what had happened to him on the previous mission. He claimed that he had been given the package and told to use it on Dr Bradley Stokes. It seems that Landers may have come into contact with AD 456 (see report by Maj Hambrook). Castle felt sure that the enemy knew they were coming and had set up ambushes for them.

Conclusion.

If the enemy had known they were coming they would have never gotten onto the planet alive. By Castles own count there were at least 9-11 hostiles on the planet. If the enemy had wanted them dead they would have set up a proper ambush at Gate B. Instead they came under harassing fire and were diverted from the real gate A. I feel that the enemy had no intention of killing the team, but as to what they were really up to I do not know.

Gate Operations 23-Nov-2001 - 25-Nov-2001

United Nations Scientific Corps

This was my second time out and it was to be a doozy. We were going to C075 on a night mission. This was a previous offworld UNSGC base, an ore extraction facility only partly completed according to records. However, our records are not what they use to be since "Operation Clean Sweep". Our outbound gate was 20.26 hundred hours and the return would be via the world's second gate at 22.02 hundred hours. It was imperative that we find the site of the second gate so that we could get home. Needless to say there was a certain amount of risk was involved in this mission. We knew roughly the distance between the two gates, but not the exact location. Again the plans of the base had been lost during "Operation Clean Sweep". The primary mission was to reconnoitre the area and the former UNSGC facility. The secondary mission was down to me, but due to a miscommunication and breakdown in the supply of the appropriate tools, I failed to collect all the relevant data requested. The transit out was a bit of a rough ride as eddies in the wormhole vortices, which caused jarring all the way there. Though it smoothed over for the last bit into its usual drudgery of dislocated moments in time, just prior to exiting.
We were bumped by hostiles as we exited. I was hit by this fire and I took a shot to the head and fell. It was only because I was wearing my helmet was I able to gain cover when the shock of not being dead sunk in. Lt. Castle ordered that we withdraw, but when we stopped I had to remind him that I had to take soil readings at the gate. So we went back the way we came and I took I a soil reading while SG18 tried to flush the ambushers out. All the time we were doing this we were under fire from at least three shooters (though it could conceivably been two people moving around or as many as four not trying too hard).

I was then able to pull back and lie down and offer supporting fire to try and keep the heads down of whoever was attacking us. This was made necessary by the fact that one of our guys was killed, I think it was Mne. Garibaldi? After an exchange of fire and much tooing and fro-ing the team extracted his body. Then we made our way down the gravel road leading from the gate. We found some cover by some buildings where wounds were dressed and the plan for our next course of action was prepared. Our gate exit being ambushed did not bode well. I think this happened, on hindsight, due to the fact that any reanimators on planet will know this is a good place to wait. You get ample warning of incoming travellers when the gate sounds off at activation and your resupply victim walks in under their own power. Anyway, while we organized ourselves at the buildings I noticed a figure skylighted on the hill next to us. I told Lt. Castle and soon after we moved away from what appeared to be another ambush set for us.

We entered a trail into some woodland. It was nearly pitch black and several of the team members were finding it difficult to see their way. Manoeuvre was slow and I was able to use this to stop and measure soil samples along the route. This was extremely difficult as it involved me having to write using a red light; I was worried about giving our position way. It was during our first leg of the wood when Lt. Castle thought he saw the gate. I told him it wasn't, I recognized the light source as an atmospheric effect. After using a night scope he agreed with me. We moved along again and I thought I saw the red light of a night sight off to my left as we went across a gully.

We started up a slight rise in the ground, which soon started dipping down slowly, whereupon Lt. Castle spotted another light in the distance that could be the gate. Again it turned out to be an anomalous visual effect from atmospheric conditions. Then we came across some remnants of a small barricaded area. I took more soil reading and we worked our way out of the woods into some clear ground. As we walked up towards the ridge our scouts ahead of us informed Lt. Castle that there were multiple contacts on the hill. In addition he told me our scouts had found the exit gate. While we hunkered down watching the hill ahead we could see shadows moving on it. I told Lt. Castle I didn't think this was the right spot for a gate. They have particular characteristics about placement and this target site didn't meet them. I couldn't convince Lt. Castle of this fact, so we proceeded with his plan.

He deployed the team out onto the face of the hill and I came up in the rear with Mne. Landers escorting me. When I had cleared the ridge I lay down and was again able to provide supporting fire to our rear, after a hostile started firing at us from where we had just come from. It would appear that we had been followed through the woods too. We edged forward to where the glow lights were found on the ground, that the scouts thought were the gate. I took more reading on the soil near this site, all the while firing was going on around us. Lt. Castle ordered that the dead contacts be piled up to form a barricade to protect us from further incoming fire. As it happens our barricade of dead people started to reanimate and walk away from us. I shot a couple of them for good measure and they were dragged back.

The time counted down and we heard the gate activate, somewhere to my rear and a good 3 to 400 metres away. I could swear the reanimators were laughing at us. Lt. Castle didn't have to order me to start running for the gate. The rest of the team overtook me in short order, but Mne. Landers ran with me and helped by pulling on my webbing to relieve me of some of the weight I was carrying. As we ran towards the gate another couple of hostiles opened up on our team and as myself and Mne. Landers passed through the gate a grenade went off exploding just as it closed behind us. The shock of the return transit caused me to collapse in a heap as I exited. Mne. Landers was wounded in the transit and had to go to sick bay. Dr. Stokes then found that the Mne. Landers had been infected on the previous mission out to C075.

Mission 4 – C075 – Sat 06/10/2001 – 20:26-22:02

Unable to join this mission due to sickness, report has been compiled from interviews with personnel on the mission.

Mission personnel

SG-16 & some SG-17. Lt Castle commanding.

Mission objectives

Science.

Mission protocols

Recon new planet.

Description

Due to a mix up the team had no idea where the outgoing gate was located so the mission emphasis turned from science to finding the gate.

The team came under harassing fire from two enemy shortly after they exited the gate.

At some point while wandering through woods the team's recon group managed to approach the rearguard from behind.

Apparently this was a combination of the recon team being sent off on a tangent while the rest continued on on the original path.

A fake gate was used to attract them to a hill where they were again attacked, taking out all four enemy.

The real gate was determined at the last second and the team had to run to make it in time. There was one final enemy defending the gate with a combination of grenades and aimed fire but everyone made it through OK.

All in the team encountered 5 - 7 enemy throughout the mission (depending on whether the two from the first attack were also involved later), dealing with the first four (or six) and ignoring the last.

Intel

The use of harassing fire implies the enemy may have been protecting something or trying to keep the team away from something. The use of a fake gate as a distraction reinforces this theory. Delayed attack on exiting the gate implies some form of guard unit that was waiting to ID the incomers (possibly waiting for a password) before initiating combat. It can be assumed the enemy were either not expecting the team or did not intend to do serious damage to them as they did not properly ambush the team at gate exit (delayed response to gate exit, small proportion of forces available). Type of enemy unknown but did not reanimate during the mission.

Doctrine

Group coordination needs to be tighter, see suggestions.

Suggestions

Training needed in night movement and navigation.

Postscript

As they came through the gate two team members collapsed. One was SO Ash with a bad case of over-exertion. She was treated fairly rapidly and sent for a bit of R&R. The other was Mne Landers who was complaining about headaches before he collapsed although he had just taken enough wounds to the body to lay a normal man out and no wounds to the head. He was taken to the sickbay, restrained and searched once again. After a short while, although he had received no treatment, he started getting up while groaning - at this point the old field reactions kicked in and I shot him, in the head, as per SOP when dealing with reanimators. Unfortunately he wasn't a reanimator so naturally enough I got into a lot of trouble, though probably not as much as if I hadn't shot him and he was a reanimator that went on to hurt someone. Might be useful for the doc to put together SOPs for grunts guarding people in sick bay or let us know what the rules are.

After this we realized mne Landers had been affected by some sort of AD456 device and had possibly been cured by the gate in.

Gate Operations 23-Nov-2001 - 25-Nov-2001

United Nations Marine Corps

This was an evening mission and started badly and got even worse - we were to deploy to C075 thru the B gate and leave 1 hour 36 min later thru the a gate. Unfortunately nobody could say where the gate was in terms of maps or compass bearing which was a real problem to say the least. The opposition was unknown but presumed to be hostile as there were no friendly forces out there . primary mission was to recon in force the area, secondary was science readings which had to be made between the 2 gates and finally diplomacy if we could find anyone who wanted to talk to us.

SG16 and SG17 deployed [SG17 less Vosloo and Vorsfelde] and SO ash to do the readings. I had severe misgivings as I knew from the start our only mission objective would be to find that gate home! As we emerged from the gate we were almost immediately fired upon. No challenge was given and we were for the most part silent. For this reason I still feel it was an ambush rather than a regular guard force and despite the second guessing of other REMF's I was there and they weren't . I counted 3 to 4 shooters and all that saved us was they forgot the old rule that at night you shoot lower than normal to hit . Ash took a round in the helmet and was stunned but we retired in very good order by pairs [the classroom lesson paid off]. I then sent the 3 members of SG17 to find the second gate and SG16 moved forward under fire to occupy the enemy . SO Ash took the readings under heavy fire for which she deserves a commendation. Just as we were about to retie Garibaldi was hit [always the biggest guy] he was furthest out so it took some effort to reach him and recover him . This was ultimately done but we had to locate the gap in enemy fire to do so - we found he was hit in the head and chest.

We withdrew to some buildings where it was noted an ambush seemed to lay ahead - enemy troops skylined themselves . We therefore took to the woods. the troops were good and refrained from using torches . SO Ash had to take readings at night . Atmospheric anomalies keep giving the promise of a gate but to no avail . SG17's lack of night experience showed when the point element lost direction and went in a circle to meet the rear guard. We ultimately broke out of the woods and found what appeared to be a gate. It matched the description given and was guarded by 4 or so hostiles. SO Ash doubted its authenticity but by then I felt we had to check and I did not want to leave an active enemy presence to our rear. The attack went in well led by Webb of SG17 and with light casualties we took the position. Ammo was now becoming a factor tho.

I formed a bunker from the bodies - and when they reanimated we shot them again - and put ash in it for safety . At one point there was another contact and Landers forgot my doctrine of ' if in doubt put half a mag in ' and fired 4 magazines at the hapless enemy. We then heard the gate open up some 4-500m away - I issued the all to obvious command of leg it and led the run - I was surprised at the speed some of my men could run but I guess they had the best incentive . I got to the gate first where we were ambushed [yet again] and a grenade landed as shots came in - I thought maybe 1 or 2 shooters. I put down cover and shouted for everyone else to ignore the fire and run for the gate - which they did without a second thought . As I ran out of ammo the only ones left were ash and landers - still doing his body guard routine by half dragging his charge . With no ammo left I stepped thru and was followed by ash who collapsed hyper ventilating and Landers who had been hit by fire as he came through . His actions were more than worthy of a decoration in that he continued to protect Ash all thru the mission, it was therefore disappointing to note he was shot in med bay when he recovered consciousness due to worries over his earlier contamination. Thankfully this seemed to be resolved by treatment later .

I feel the enemy knew we were coming - the third ambush in an hour and a half kind of confirmed it for me. In future directions to the gate must be provided as well as a gate description. Sadly enough samples were not recovered but I can confirm the world was hostile! Both SG teams gave it their all despite the worry of not knowing where the out gate was . More practise at night combat is required but both teams [and 16 especially] put in excellent set piece section attacks and withdrawals from combat.

Mission Five

C126A
10.14 – 11.57
Destroyed minor Intel base.
Primary mission – Recon in force.

Team assigned - 2Lt Castle (SG-16), 2ic Mne Landers (SG-16), Mne Scholefield (SG-16), Mne Daniels (SG-16), Mne Garibaldi (SG-16), Mne Ulrich (SG-16), Corp Vorsfeldt (SG-17), Mne Hawk (SG-17), Mne Hunt (SG-17), Dr Well (MID), Dr Stokes (Science), Mne Briggs, Capt De Beer

Upon exiting the gate the team had a friendly contact with two unknowns. Capt De Beer identified them as Doc and Taz, two of the missing members of SG-14 (MIA on C158 2 years previous). It became apparent that the other members of the missing team (Bear, Trollkin and Brian) were also on planet and in the immediate vicinity. Castle and De Beer were informed that SG-14 were on planet expecting an attack by “Zombies”. They were there to stop the “zombies” from exiting through the gate to an undisclosed destination. Castle claims that he was told that the zombies would infect some undisclosed people if they made it through, although he cannot remember who informed him or be completely sure he was told.

Dr Stokes confirmed that SG-14 were mildly contaminated, but seemed to be in full control of their faculties. Castle and De Beer made some kind of deal with SG-14 concerning an exchange of Intel for clothing and ammunition. After some time several hostile contacts were made with the “zombies”. SG-14 took the fight to the enemy in an aggressive manner and took casualties. Two members (Bear and Trollkin) were taken down, believed dead. After a short fight the zombies were neutralised (these zombies were “them” type reanimaters) and the dead members of SG-14 were brought back to the fire line. De Beer had been killed in the firefight. Trollkin was seen to reanimate and left through the gate. All the dead members of SG-14 (everyone except Doc) were tied up but Doc got highly agitated by this action and ordered Dr Well, at gunpoint, to untie them, which he did quickly. Castle intervened and after a short altercation shot Doc and had him tied. The dead members of SG-14 reanimated and headed for the nearest gate but were stopped and tied to trees.

After a discussion with the various departmental representatives on planet it was decided to bring SG-14 back to RGHQ 51 (it must be pointed out that Dr Stokes disagreed with the decision). Several of the zombies were collected and the whole ensemble were returned through the gate. SG-14 were escorted to the awaiting Portondown transports and taken away.

Conclusion.

There are two distinct groups of reanimaters and it would appear that they are at war. Capt De Beer should be properly debriefed over what was discussed in the field.

Contact mission report 23-25/11/2001

OPERATION NEWBURY –Con-033-NB4

23rd TO 25th NOVEMBER 2001

Personal Report by Cpt R. de Beer

Drafted 25th November 2002, Amended 4th February 2002

Final Edit 7th February 2002

On Sunday 25th November 2001, I was detached from my normal duties as Porton Down Liaison Officer, and attached to SG16 for this mission. A contingent including SG16, SG17, Science and Intel, met SG14 on C126A.
On exiting through the Stargate, I noticed a group of two people off to our right, SG16 was heading off to the left, under orders from this unknown individual. This individual turned out to be SteveG unit leader of SG14. With him was ChrisB. I immediately went across to SteveG to establish his identity. Other members of SG14 were also present – JohnG, LezC and BrianK.

 I discovered the following information:

I negotiated a deal whereby if they supplied us with Intel, we would supply them with rations and ammunition. I confirmed this agreement with Lt Castle (Mission Leader, CO, SG16), who agreed to leave SG14 alone, and to start the agreement, would hand over any spare ammunition to SG14 upon our leaving of the planet. Dr Stokes confirmed, what we already believed, that they were indeed contaminated.

A short while later the group came under attack from 5-6 of “Them”. SG14, together with myself and Dr Stokes, bore the brunt of the attack, while the combination of SG16 and SG17 contained 1-2 of “Them”. Once contained SG17 did a flanking manoeuvre and came to the aid of SG14, who by this time had lost two members. I had taken a wound to the head during the intense part of the fighting and Mne Scholefield administered medical treatment. I must admit that when I had recovered enough to take stock of the situation, I deemed it under control, and continued my debriefing of SteveG, unfortunately there were still hostiles in the area and I was wounded in the torso.

I recovered in Medlab, where Dr Stokes informed me that Lt Castle had ignored my request, and returned with all members of SG14 as prisoners, with the exception of JohnG, who had managed to escape through the gate. Cpt Jameson informed me that they had been transported immediately to Porton Down. I confronted BRIGGEN Courtney regarding his decision to send SG14 to Porton Down without my input. He told me that I was too close to the situation to make rational decisions, and that he had ensured that SG14 would be safe until a decision by HQ was reached.

When I arrived at Porton Down, I discovered that BRIGGEN Courtney had kept his promise. SG14 were “on ice” and, with the exception of a blood sample taken from each of them, no experimentation had been done. I was later informed that the blood sample was taken to confirm their identities. They are under guard, 24/7, by a team of at least four marines at all times.

Lt T. Castle, SG16, 51st Peacekeeper Division

Gate Operations 23-Nov-2001 - 25-Nov-2001

United Nations Marine Corps

The final mission was on the morning of Sunday 25 Nov. 2001 to c126A. SG 16 was accompanied by Dr well of Intel and Captain De Beer. Also present was SG17 less Vosloo but inc Vorsfelde and Dr stokes. The threat level was classified as medium to high. The primary mission was recon in force and the secondary Intel . This was the world where SG14 went missing so we went to look for them .

We deployed and immediately contacted what appeared to be SG14. SG 17 did a clearance patrol to sweep one way while 16 formed a perimeter and the command group discussed things with SG14. SG14 indicated they were fighting 'them' and they expected an attack soon as 'them' tried to reach the star gate. Captain De Beer confirmed it was her husband in command of SG14 and Dr stokes said that whilst they were mildly contaminated he believed them to be 'the real thing' . Based upon this info I agreed with Captain De Beer that we would leave them behind to fight their war. We would leave extra ammo and therefore foster a possible alliance.

Then we were attacked SG14 taking the initial brunt and staying static to fight off 4 enemies. SG17 provided rear security while SG16 guarded the flank. SG14 took heavy casualties [I believe due to their tactics] and were reinforced by a pair from SG16. Myself Daniels and Garibaldi set about recovering 2 dead from SG14 who were left in the open and dealing with 2 enemy. This we did placing trollkin by the star gate and sallying forth to deactivate enemy weapons. It was then I saw one of 14's dead reanimate and walk to the gate. The three of us flung him to the ground just in time to see trollkin walk thru. At about this time SG17 put in a long awaited flank attack having gone all the way around a lake and mopped up the enemy. I then returned to SG14's position where there was some sporadic enemy fire. De Beer was incapacitated as were 2 more of SG14. I ordered them secured. Dr well came over and informed me doc was unhappy with this. Something in his eyes gave the game away and as he moved I saw doc's gun come up and was forced to incapacitate him with a burst from my trusty Thompson. All enemy weapons were deactivated and their bodies gathered for transit.

Dr stokes voiced an opinion we should leave SG14 behind. Myself , Well and all others present believed we should bring them home as they were our dead and contaminated. Dr stokes reaffirmed his beliefs until I reminded him I was in command of the mission and that was the end of it. The team prepared to move heavily laden with SG14, 'them ' bodies and weapons . As we approached the gate it activated but we awaited our gate home bringing all our troops home [ after some struggling with the bodies of SG14]. Subsequently Captain De Beer asked why I had changed my mind and brought SG14 home . Basically it was because when I left them I didn't know they were reanimators and standing orders say no dead SG personnel to be left behind.

Altogether a good effort by SG16 and 17 - 16 once again using mobile pairs tactics to great effect . I think this tactic should be adopted as it results in a lot less casualties than the stand and fight system used by SG14.

AFTERMATH:

That was the end of the missions. I for one thought we had a good effort. lots was achieved and recovered for few casualties and once again SG16 went as a team worked as a team and came home as a team. All members did their bit with the old hands of Daniels and Landers helping the others - who learned damn fast!

SG16 has had a fair amount of criticism some deserved some not but despite that I think the best way of summing the team up was from a member of science - whilst the mission was hazardous they said they would go once they knew 16 were down for it - I asked why and the short answer was because we bring our people home and can fight like hell, and frankly that is the best praise a fire team leader can ask for!
