Gatewatch Report
OPERATION NEVILLES CROSS
August 4th - 6th 2006
Issued @ 13:00hrs on 08/04/2006
The new Gatewatch monitoring system has identified the formation of 19 signal spikes for usable inbound and outbound wormholes during CON-60. All signals are exhibiting extremely high amplitude, which we interpret as representing high risk flight conditions for our crews. This comparatively low number of Gates is in part but not entirely due to improvements in signal resolution. However we are of the opinion that traffic on the SG#51 system has actually decreased since 2005. We stand by our observations and comments detailed in our report for CON-58.
The 19 activations for CON-60 cover the period 08/04/2006 (22:31) - 08/06/2006 (13:03). Only 2 have been designated as associated to a Pathfinder missions, Gates #18 & #19, those to and from G-356 on 08/06/2006. Of the remaining 17, the first 8 stand out for comment. All are going to G-1452 aka VP459A, but are spread out in such a way as to enable a 12 hour mission to be undertaken. We have been fortunate to be able to match the signals for the other 9 Gates to known planetary targets, see the entry under Notes in the table below for further details.
As per CON-58, wherein UK, US and Russian crews suffered a number of serious casualties due to extremely rough in-flight experiences, we believe that there is no reason to expect anything other than similar conditions during CON-60, due to the high frequency and very strong amplitude of the Gate's signal spikes. As before great caution and firm flight discipline is essential to prevent injuries, damage or loss of personnel and or equipment during this unique operation.
Gatewatch 50, 52 and 54 are in the present operational cycle, all reporting similar levels of activity, with very few useful, yet incredibly strong well resolved signal spikes.
During CON-58 the aggregate total of ABC recovered from off-world equipment reach 63% above pre-CON-52 levels, CON-60 will be subject to Extreme ABC Protection Protocols. Additional NBC suits and filters will be provided. Thus it will be necessary for all exterior gear to be removed for decontamination to ensure personnel safety. CON-60 will like CON-58 conclude with a mandatory "lock down" pending a full medical and equipment inspection/decontamination at each of our operational facilities. We at GATEWATCH apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your co-operation in maintaining bio-security.
Please also see the GATEWATCH Report "SG51 Gate Identification Chart", for more information on the data recovered from CON-58.

Intelligence Summary: Planet conforms to that of a world destroyed by Worm infestation. Multiple Contacts engaged. Reports indicate at least 1 other Gate exists on this world. Position unknown.
After Action Reports:
Brief:
Long range reconnaissance patrol to stay offworld overnight to previously visited planet so as to trial feasibility of concept and develop standard operation procedures.
Chain-of-Command:
Alpha squad; Maj. Morgenstern (1IC), Sgt. Ward, Pfc. Berne.
Bravo squad; CSM. Briggs (2IC), Sgt. Kelley, Sgt. Well. (also inc. Lcpl. Lewis for extraction Mission 2)
Intel Summary:
Three people heard and seen at 00.02, but interception failed and as they escaped through the gate. One person seen and intercepted at 16.00, found with biohazard box and stargazer unit. Two people who were searching for their colleague with a box, were engaged at 05.15; one terminated and the other escaped through the gate. Biohazard box examined at RGHQ-51 and found to contain broken eggs with code numbers on them, similar to previous retrieval that had contained modified bird flu virus.
XO log:
Planet found to be denuded of animal and plant life indicating worm activity since last visit by an SG team to this world (see CON-049-B01 report by LMM). Bravo scouted the area around the gate while Alpha set camp.
Both teams were walking towards the gate when we heard the sound of people talking in the distance. We increased our speed to intercept and I issued a challenge to the unidentified personnel to identify themselves, which they didn’t. I then challenged them to halt and opened fire when they failed to comply with the order. However, the gate activated and they escaped through it under fire.
Shortly after this event, Bravo squad went back through on the first gate back to get some quality sleep at the base. Meanwhile, Alpha made a long patrol around the edge of the mesa, finding nothing of note, but we thought we saw a second gate. However, this turned out to be our entry gate, which we had found having walked in a large circle back to our start point.
We settled down and Ward took first watch. I was woken by her at approximately 16.00. She had seen a lone figure skylined as he was walking across the mesa. We intercepted him and a very brief firefight occurred. He was taken down with no injuries sustained by us. He turned out to be a Type 1 who reactivated, but then collapsed, so it seems the new ammo is more effective at inflicting damage on them. He was searched and found to have a container marked as a biohazard, and he had also picked up one of our stargazer remote sensors. We secured him and set the stargazer up again.
I then started my watch and Ward volunteered to stand it with me. We heard the gate activate and two figures walked through it. We got Berne up and we went to intercept them. One was French sounding; the other might have been German or Polish. They were looking for their friend, who we assumed was the Type 1 we subdued in the earlier exchange of fire. Alpha initiated a flanking manoeuvre to prevent the two men from escaping. A firefight broke out and I was wounded in both arms. At this point things became less clear, but Ward was able to reach me and apply bandages to my arms. I think Berne was also wounded in the frank exchange of views between them and us. While one man managed to escape through the gate, the other was taken down. He then repeatedly reanimated and had to be subdued further by being shot again. After a while he stopped reanimating.
I reorganised our positions and had the container hidden. Ward and I then resumed our watch, while Berne went back to sleep. By this time I was feeling pretty rough, probably from the wounds and thought I saw lights around the gate, but when I looked more carefully it was just the play of light and the sun rose on the barren denuded landscape that use to be an arboreal world before the worms came and ate everything.
Bravo squad arrived on schedule (see Mission 2) and escorted Alpha back home with two dead Type 1s and the biohazard container (see DSTL Report). I now need to discuss with the General my SOP recommendations for future overnight missions…
Intelligence Summary: See Mission 1
After Action Reports:
Destination: VP459A (G-1452). Outbound Gate: 08:40 - 08:58, Inbound Gate: 09:37 - 09:55
Team: CSM. Briggs (2IC), SGT. Kelley, LCPL Lewis
Parameters: Extraction of Alpha team. MAJ. Morgenstern (1IC), SGT. Ward, PFC. Berne who had been offworld for 12 hours.
We arrived to find the world desiccated, possibly by worm activity. Contact was made with Alpha team and the correct passwords exchanged. In addition to the 3 members of Alpha team there were also 2 prisoners, a consequence of a firefight the night before, and a small case with unknown hazardous contents, thus labelled. As a result of the firefight both Morgernstern and Berne had injuries to limbs but were bandaged and mobile.
We made our way to the gate and waited to one side in a defensive formation till approx 2 mins to gate activation before approaching. Upon activation we proceeded through the Gate with no interruption.
Retrieved were 3 members of Alpha team, 2 male prisoners possibly with Type M1 infection, 1 case with unknown biohazard contents, 1 tube of wet soil sample and 1 tube of dry soil sample. All sent to Porton Down for analysis (see DSTL report).
Stargazer reading taken
Additional information: One of the prisoners was wearing a red beret with a Russian badge. After some research done this badge was identified as a `Red Guards` medallion. Given to members of the military units honoured during WWII. Unknown if this cap and badge belonged to the prisoner.
Intelligence Summary: Standard Arboreal world. Samples taken and a Prof Farquar retrieved. Multiple contacts found and engaged. 4 personel lost offworld.
After Action Reports:
Destination: VP042A (G0736). Outbound Gate: 15:37 - 15:53, Inbound Gate: 16:01 - 16:17.
Alpha squad: CSM Briggs, SSGT Wells, SGT Schmidt.
Bravo squad: MAJ Morgernstern, SGT Kelley, LCPL Lewis, PFC Berne.
Parameters: Standard recon.
Planet conforms to Standard Arborial with a body of water not far from the gate site, air temperature, very warm. Morgernstern ordered Alpha squad to do recon, Bravo squad to the rear. There was a moment of possible contact but this turned out to be nothing. We then proceeded with a full circuit of the body of water. No contacts.
En route back to the gate site we encountered a man wearing a white lab coat who was shouting to us. He identified himself as Prof Robert Farquar and said that he had important things to tell us but didn’t have much time, as his minders would be following, he had given them the slip. The rest of Alpha and Bravo teams went ahead to set up defensive positions and left Kelley with myself and the Professor.
Professor Farquar then said that everything is about Project Phoenix. He said that ‘they’ are regimenting and compartmentalising themselves like the military but it is all pointless. The type 1’s think that the casualties that will happen as a result of Project Phoenix are acceptable and necessary. He then said that Project Phoenix is not a what but a where. At this point the Professor fell to the ground and seemed to have some kind of seizure, this only lasted a few seconds. When he came round he said that he was ok and that this happens as a result of fighting ‘them’, that he can fight ‘them’ for a while. Implied that ‘them’ means the type-1 Nanite infection.
The professor got up and then Kelley sedated him. Morgernstern took the piece of paper that he seemed to be reading from and put it in her pocket. Alpha and Bravo teams them began moving towards the gate again. The Professor was still quite lucid. He said that he had been mapping the gate network using gravity wells and that the gravity waves can only travel along the gate network in one direction or the other, not both at the same time. He said that Project Phoenix would be a disaster and should not be allowed to happen but the Type 1’s think its necessary.
He then said that if you have high intelligence and a strong sense of right and wrong you can fight the infection for a while. The lower your intelligence, the faster the infection takes hold and whatever your natural impulse is, the infection makes you more so and that Sandra Knight is like him (and they went out for lunch once). He then said that once infected you can return to the planet of the origin of your infection (he called it ‘home’) whenever and from wherever you want. To go to other (non home) worlds you have to wait for a gate like everyone else, that’s why there are so few people wandering about, but the planet of your origin you can get back to just by asking to go home.
We then heard a Gate activation and went to ground. The professor was still talking and Morgernstern gave the order to shut him up. Kelley sedated him again and he lapsed into unconsciousness. Multiple contacts were then sighted (3 in total). Whilst down and quiet Morgenstern then ordered Kelly and myself to get the professor and his notes back to the base at all costs, she then gave me the piece of paper (see below) she had taken and said that we were to perform this duty to the exclusion of all else. Morgenstern gave the order to begin moving to the gate and just as we exited heavy woodland we were spotted by the 3 contacts who opened fire on our position.
Kelley and myself, with the Professor, ran for the gate, along with Well who was on point for Alpha team. Gate time was 3 mins away at this point. From our position we could not see the other squad members but sounds of firing continued. Well tried to go back to help with the fight but could not get to their position due to lack of cover. With imminent gate activation he returned to our position to report that the other party members seemed to be down and he could not assist for the reasons stated above. At this point the gate opened and we began transit.
Morgernstern, Briggs, Schmidt and Berne left on VP042A. Condition, unknown and due to no further gates to this world reported, extraction was not possible. In addition, one latest generation medical unit also left on world with field medic Berne. Retrieved were Prof Farquar, notes referred to by him, a sample of water and a sample of earth (see DSTL report). Returned team members: SSGT Well, SGT Kelley and LCPL Lewis.
Sample’s sent to Porton Down for analysis. Professor Farquar questioned on base prior to being sent to Porton down. Transcription of the questions and answers will follow.
Project phoenix – not a thing a place somewhere to go.
Gravity waves I detected using cobbled together equip from various bases – they are going to one place a single point – big gravity wave.
Was in charge of finding them. Lots of gravity flowcharts. Plots of map of gravity of stargate system.
Which directions are the gravity going.
We have no affinity with gate network – afraid of it personally – awestruck – ALWAYS go home to contaminated planet.
Weaker minds – God.
20+ - amazing, WOW, confused.
Steered into doing by primative mind – higher fear area. Hypothemalic.
Reason made sense.
Whatever is coming, I think is TERRIBLE, worms are bad – others think it’s a necessary evil. Sad etc, got to happen – those in The know is for the best – a few survivors – a noble sacrifice.
Try & fight the instict and understand it.
Met Sandra knight – still a few like us not totally with the programme.
Others accept they are driven – to me its wrong.
Religious types think its god – type 1’s treat fanatics as mentally ill. Perception is wrong, exaggerates religious belief, fanaticism, small trace becomes
Build a model of how reality works – its critical – it’s a life work.
Gates. We do not control.
All in the DARK. Inkling. Worms. Whatever running, something to do with gates.
Intelligence – gates etc beyond our understanding
Nanites – perform some programming organism
Any capacity for thinking.
Critical level of – small animals
600 million years – universal thing kickup date – explosion of life at some time.
Nothing happened for billions of years – just blue green algae.

Q: Last time on mission, you left with a DHD what do you remember?
Prof says that he remembers people getting shot but doesn’t remember whether he got to the destination as things went wrong and there was a fire-fight. He woke up somewhere bandaged. After this he thinks he went through classic stages of infection. Type-1’s bandaged him up. He was then was taken to a Type-1 planet and began to work for them. Working on Gate gravity waves that the spine creates.
The average IQ of a Type-1 is high. If the IQ of a subject is high there is a chance that they can fight the infection longer…this is a theory, he has no evidence for this. He thinks an instinctive understanding of right and wrong helps. Fight/flight reflex, know at an instinctive level right and wrong. Type-1 infection makes you more of what you were before infection and this is how you end up regarding the Gate network. If you are religious you will regard it as a god like structure. As a scientist the Prof find the gates fascinating but scary.
The Gate project is to map the spine network using the Gravity wave directions along a spine. He remarks that Sandra Knight is like him and they have had lunch.
The groups of Type-1’s are possibly on recon when we see them but he has no evidence. If a Type-1 opens enough gates enough times eventually they will get where they want to, they can always get home though if on the right spine. They just think of home and the gate will open. Any gate will open and take you home by the most direct route.
Type-1 gate walking is a ‘go home’ function. Prof has never had to do this. The subject not discussed among Type-1’s. The conscious thought to go home and the ‘go-home’ function could be 2 different things? The Prof doesn’t know.
Q: Define home?
Type-1's have a system for identifying planets that is not compatible with ours. 25 jumps along his spine is ‘home’ to the Prof.
The Prof was cobbling a device together for measuring the Gate gravity waves. This was made from equipment with Cyrillic, Japanese, Latin and French script.
Q: What is Project Phoenix.
High grade spooks are involved and lots of scientists. No one knows the whole picture other than a few, info is on a need know basis. The Prof has an instinctive understanding that Phoenix is terrible, worse than the Worms. Lots of people are trying to put 2 and 2 together at the Type-1 end. The higher command structure thinks it’s a necessary evil and a price worth paying. For the best, they say a few will survive and that it’s a noble sacrifice. Fort Apache, Arizona has also been mentioned by the same people that mentioned Project Phoenix.
Q: Is there any Connection between Type-1’s and 2’and 3’s?
Prof says that there is a war going on. He has no idea as to why.
Q: The Preacher, how does he fit in?
Religion means that people can end up misinterpreting the Gate complex as a God thing, they start taking the bible and applying it to things that it doesn’t apply to. When Type-1’s start to manifest these quirks they are regarded by the Type-1 community as sick and looked after. Internal battle with the nanites could also cause this, possible Type-2 infection also.
Unknown if the 2’s and 3’s are more evolved strains of each other.
Q: Any relationships with the worms?
The supposition is that the 2’s and 3’s are related to the worms and this is the reason why there is a war. The war could also be due to the fact that the 2’s and 3’s take over Type-1’s. The type-1’s never get any personnel back once converted.
Q: Phoenix, are you aware of any locations?
No. The people that know are on max security. Could be happening in the near future, as there is a sense of urgency.
Q: Any there Type-1 agents on earth?
The Prof cant help as the people that were dealing with this are in military intelligence and are on max security. The Prof is not plugged into the current network so he isn’t aware of any earth advances. He remarks that if a request for equipment is put in it will materialise usually within a week or so. The bases use windmills and solar power, generators etc for power. Essential use only, no luxuries.
If the Type-1’s go anywhere that is likely to have Type-2’s then they do need to wear masks, quite a lot of places are contaminated, the Type-1’s live in pressurised complexes. Menial work gets shared as is needed. Not everyone is specialised in a field. All types of people are present, all ages. Youngest child is about 3 days. Oldest was 103.
Q: Lifespan?
Standard, but the bodies don’t wear out as quickly, things still wear out but not as fast as a normal human.
Q: What species are the Nanites designed for?
The Type-1’s need intelligence so that the life form can be put to work. The Type-1 view in general is that humans are part of the wider problem. The Type-1’s are also trying to find out what’s going on as they don’t know, trying the piece together the big picture.
Q: Can you give us any names of converted personnel?
Yes the Prof can give names. There are a lot of ex-colony converts. If you know what they were doing before they were converted then you can probably work out what they are doing now.
Q: Why are we the problem?
It is considered that standard humans are not well. We are getting in the way.
Q: Is it safe to try and work with Type-1’s?
No the Prof thinks not. It would be an alliance of convenience. The Type-1 general view would have humans as the enemy also. He has no idea if the Type-1’s are working towards Project Phoenix or against it.
***Interview Ends***
Intelligence Summary: Standard Arboreal world. Target area is the site of a former archive facility. Multiple contacts engaged, no materials or samples retreived.
After Action Reports:
I was unexpectedly put on active duty after 4 members of a team from an earlier mission were lost to enemy action. 5 minutes to gate out I was woken up to lead a team on my first active gate mission, I grabbed gear and ran to the gate room.
Also on mission were Well, Palmer, Sackville-West and Lewis. We exited the gate and advanced into a small wood, Well was challenged from the target bunker and he began negotiating with its inhabitants. During negotiations they asked him to leave his rifle behind and approach, I indicated that he should not disarm himself but he advanced on their position and left his rifle at the base of a tree. Sackville-West and I took up flanking positions as the X-rays opened fire on Well. Palmer then began negotiations to distract them as we moved to assault positions. I took out a bandage and approached the building from the side, a sniper took a shot and hit me in the leg and I dropped, As I had the bandage ready I used it and moved off the road into cover. Palmer and I then assaulted the bunker took out 2 type 1’s and recovered Well. The sniper then began negotiations with Palmer and I used the distraction to get round behind him, Palmer promised that we would not take him down and allowed them to leave. After a search of the building all we discovered was spent ammunition from the assault I can only assume that any data package was removed with the T1 casualties. We then ex-filtrated through the gate back to base.
***NEXT ENTRY***
We arrived on world to find lights at the presumed location of the archive facility. Further investigation proved the presence of Type Is engaged in unknown activities, but in possession of the facility. Well decided to go forward and negotiate, but went too close. After some exchanges he was shot. The rest of us had moved somewhat closer, but in the absence of any effective command and control action devolved down to the individual uncoordinated level, exacerbated by the nature of the night time environment.
I believe there were at least 2 figures in the facility, as they were occasionally back lit in windows or doors. The mission commander, in the absence of Well, appeared to be on some personal stealth rescue mission, and therefore issued no orders, and exercised no control over the encounter henceforth.
I eventually got pretty close to the facility undetected, but suffered an equipment failure that unfortunately required light to remedy. I was shot from another position to the side and rear of the facility. In pursuance of the standing orders of not abandoning materiel of use to the enemy I attempted to continue to repair my equipment and was shot again.
After a rather chaotic engagement the one remaining enemy combatant suggested a truce, and everyone was patched up and went their respective ways. As far as I’m aware, no useful intelligence was returned, apart from the interest of Type Is in the archive facility.
NOTES Command and control is very difficult at night, and it’s total absence makes a coherent execution of any mission impossible. The second most senior officer shouldn’t ever be far enough away from his troops so that he is not recoverable even if engaging in diplomacy.
***NEXT ENTRY***
Destination: XC0126A (G-0112). Outbound Gate 21:34 - 22:07, Inbound Gate: 23:14 - 23:47.
Team: SSGT Well, 2LT Frost, LCPL Lewis, SGT Palmer, 2LT Sackville-West.
Parameters: Recon of former archive facility that is in enemy hands. Investigate and return any and all materials found within. Exercise extreme caution.
Team exited the gate in a clearing surrounded by trees in darkness, to the front I could see lights. We advanced towards the light via the right hand side of the clearing and got about halfway down when a voice ordered us to stop and identify ourselves. Frost began to converse with the contact in the trees and Well went forward to talk at the orders of the hidden contact. At this point I realised that the team's rear was not covered and headed back towards the gate to a tree that would provide suitable cover.
Due to my position I did not hear much of the conversation between our team and the other party but there was some shouting and then firing, I head a cry from Well who had obviously been hit. Various conversation and firing continued over the next 30 or so minutes and I was concerned that the other members of the team would not make the outbound Gate. 2 figures left by the gate during this time, due to their gait and ability to open the Gate I assume that they were members of the enemy, Gatewalking due to injuries.
At this point I distinctly heard an unfamiliar voice say ‘where are the other two?’ and one of the members of our team say ‘they’re down’. The unfamiliar voice then said ‘in that case I’m ready to make a deal’. I then judged the situation to be under control with no further perceived threat from the rear of our position so I moved up to join the other members of my team.
When I arrived at the building I found my team members in various states of injury. Upon Frosts orders I made a sweep of the building and found nothing other than rubble and litter. The remaining enemy contact left unmolested through the gate and we finished patching up our wounded. We then made our way back to the gate and upon activation left without further incident.
No samples or prisoners retrieved.
Intelligence Summary: World in the process of being destroyed by Worms.
After Action Reports:
Destination: VP888A (G1442). Outbound Gate 00:07 - 00:09, Inbound Gate: 00:29 - 00:31
Team: SSGt Well, LCPL Lewis.
Parameters: Standard Recon.
SSGT Well and I arrived on the world to be thrown to the floor immediately. The world was in the grip of violent earthquakes and hurricane like winds, atmosphere very thin, almost un-breathable and the noise was deafening. The area about 40 metres around the Gate site seemed to be in the eye of the storm.
The planet, as far as I could see, was covered in Worms in the process of stripping the world of everything. According to previous reports we should have been surrounded by sea. The waters edge, which began just at the edge of the area by the gate, was receding quickly as if a plug had been pulled. Where I could see the end of a worm was like looking into a hole, with matter streaming in as if being sucked by a vacuum cleaner. The outer shell of the worms was glinting in the dim light as if covered by different metals.
In the clouds above us were shapes moving through the clouds. Due to poor conditions it was not possible to get a good look at them but there was a slight glinting from them as well. Due to the violence of the conditions it was not possible to move to the receding water to take a sample. The air smelled and tasted sweet and was full of dust and debris.
Upon return gate activation I grabbed a handful of the earth that we were lying on, struggled to the Gate and entered transit with SSGT Well.
Returned 1 sample of earth, sent to Porton Down (See DSTL report).Intelligence Summary: Standard Arboreal world. Samples taken. Multiple contacts engaged/spoken to. Intel on enemy actions retrieved.
After Action Reports:
After a standard exit from the gate (the gate travel was nothing unusual which apparently recently has been unusual) lieutenant Well and I had a discussion in which he gave me tactical command. With Well were Lewis and Kelley, in assault were Sackville-West and Ward with myself as squad leader. We performed a sweep of the area and identified a rally point. As we settled into RV1 a gate activation was heard, we hunkered down and eventually heard a pair of Americans arguing. We decided to make contact so I led Sackville-West to intercept them. I advanced with hands open palm forward and began trying to convince them we were SGC. After I had made contact and convinced them I was SGC they asked to speak to a Captain Veil, not knowing who they were talking about I decided to pass them over to Lieutenant Well. They passed an Intel package on to Lt Well who then asked me to carry it, At this point we had movement behind our position with the yanks my assault squad attacked on dropped a group of apparent TII’s (though that classification may be inaccurate as one of the yanks (a rather foul mouthed individual) began jumping up and down on the X-rays until he got blisters.
After a brief discussion the yanks decided to go hunt some re-animator and left. About 15 minutes to gate we set up a defensive position on the gate with the assault squad high on a slope above the easiest attack route, the other three took up concealed positions on the gate. After about 10 minutes 2 figures were spotted moving towards the gate. I am not sure who opened fire but the leader of the two was taken down fairly quickly, at this point a third X-ray appeared with what appeared to be an M79 grenade launcher I opened fire and moved position, I was surprised to see it react to the new mk7 munitions as if in great pain, repeated hits drove it to the ground but didn’t have a long term affect, eventually after several grenade shots from the TIII it picked up the first T? casualty (probably TI as it hadn’t tried to get up) and moved off, the last TI was well protected in a bunker and it took a lot of work to get it out and drop it, After it was downed the gate activated and I ordered Assault to make for the gate, as I was within 5 feet of the gate I felt a hit in my chest and I woke up some time later in the medical bay to learn I had been shot by the unit medic.
***NEXT ENTRY***
We arrived on world, and shortly afterwards began a sweep into the woods. Shortly afterwards a gate activated and eventually two figures appeared, chased by 3 others. A firefight took place down slope, and Squad B was despatched to finish off the last of the attackers, as a brief contact had established the defenders were probably UNSGC.
Squad B was detached from lagaared squad A to go and either talk or engage this UNSGC element in their new position near our gate. We were positioned with a small height advantage, and Frost proceeded to talk to the female team member. The other had all the paranoid tendencies of somebody off world too long. They claimed to be UNSGC from a US gate, and their accent was consistent with this. The effort at diplomacy was punctuated by paranoid outburst from the male team member, and was barely making any progress, hampered by our lack of knowledge of the name of the US gate’s commander. We eventually got the information off of Well, and they recognised Well’s name.
Well came across and started to talk to them, and things progressed much better. Eventually they told us of ambushing some Type Is, and securing a package from them, and how they’d been chased from world to world by Type I reinforcements. They had lost c.7 of their c.9 man team in subsequent engagements with a platoon plus sized enemy force. They entrusted the package to Well, and impressed on him how important it was to get it back to Earth. They then set off to buy us time, and act as a decoy mission, which I would consider to be actions above and beyond in normal circumstances.
We returned to our defensive position and made plans for our exfiltration. Squad A was to take up a defensive position on the gate, and Squad B was to hold a position forward to force any enemy to deploy, delay, and retreat under cover as necessary. The squads made their way to their new positions, and awaited the gate.
With about 20 minute to go the other gate sounded again, and we prepared for engagement, especially with the previous days tragedy in our minds. We watched the approach of the unknown force from our ambush positions, and Lewis opened the innings when a presumed hostile moved to compromise her defensive advantage. This hostile was dropped immediately, however, the other took cover, and whilst relative ineffectual had a clear line of sight to our exit. A new figure then stumbled onto the scene armed with a grenade launcher, and engaged anybody within range. The remaining Type I was also sometimes firing on this target. When hit by a burst of fire the target sounded in serious pain, and even dropped to the floor briefly, before regaining his feet. Every hit was bringing some sort of auditory response of pain from the target, and delaying his actions. The behaviour was, I believe, consistent with a Type III being hit by the new ammunition. The sporadic fire was slowing the target down, and Frost was always behind a tree when a grenade (1 0f 7) was discharged.
With less than c.3 minutes to gate time team B manoeuvred to defeat the other Type I in cover, and neutralised him. He was kept suppressed, and a successful exit was achieved.
The package appeared to contain Unarmed Combat Vehicle data sheets, and was labelled Project Pheonix, Fort Apache, Arizona. This information was turned over to the intel division.
NOTES PPPPPP Prior Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance – as evidenced by the plan for exfiltration, although any chest wound would have made the execution more hazardous – but nobody said soldiering was a safe profession.
INTEL There is at least one other gate fairly close by.
***NEXT REPORT***
Destination: G-0356. Outboud Gate 10:05 - 10:22, Inbound Gate: 12:44 - 13:01.
Alpha Team: 2LT Frost, LCPL Ward, 2LT Sackville-West
Bravo Team: SSGT Well, LCPL Lewis, SGT Kelley.
Parameters: Pathfinder Mission.
Teams exited the gate and proceeded with recon. The world conformed to Standard Arboreal type, wooded, temperature quite warm and sunny. After a circuit of the immediate area we settled behind cover to wait for the exit gate. Sample taken of earth.
We heard a gate activation but it did not come from the area around our gate so we assumed that there was another gate on this world. After about 10 mins 2 contacts were spotted moving from the new Gate location towards our Gate location. They moved out of my field of vision.
Frost and Sackville-West moved to intercept them at our gate site and a loud argument ensued. Well moved up to my position to ask if I could remember the name of the American base commander as the contact’s were apparently an American SG team and were demanding that we prove our identity by naming their commander. Well then move up to join Frost and Sackville-West placing me in nominal charge of the remaining personnel (Kelley and Ward). Realising that I was not in fact the senior officer I advised Kelley of the decision by Well and asked if she wanted to take command, she advised negative.
We then heard another gate activation from the same direction as the one the Americans had come though. After a few mins the contacts were sighted. I realised that we had no way of advising our team members as they had the only radios on site. I gave the order not to engage the enemy unless fired upon first. Then the Americans came shouting and running to engage the enemy. Frost, Well and Sackville-West returned to our position at this time.
Frost advised me that he had important information on him and at all costs it had to get back to the base. Frost then took Alpha team and engaged the enemy from their left flank. When all enemy contacts were down we transferred the documents that Frost had to the sample case that I was carrying.
The Americans left us and we made our way back towards the gate site to wait for transit home. Standing orders were for me to get to the Gate at all costs but if I went down then the next available person to grab the sample box and get it through the Gate. There was then another Gate activation from the direction of the last two, we had good cover and maintained position. Alpha team would engage and if possible neutralise any contacts whilst Bravo team supported any fall back necessary.
Several contacts were then engaged. I was ordered to stay out of the fire-fight unless forced to engage and so did not see all of what transpired. From shouted commands and information I understand there were several type 1’s and a possible type 3. 2 enemy managed to Gatewalk, one carrying the other and we let them do so. Upon activation I was first through the Gate as ordered and the rest of both teams followed.
Returned to base: all personnel, 1 sample of soil (see DSTL report), 1 envelope with unknown contents (see Scans/info below). With regard to the images of Automated Aerial Reconnaissance Drones, pls see me as there are too many pages to realisitically put un on this page.
