Issued @ 19:00Z 11/16/2007
With reference to the damage report notification issued at 16:00Z 09/28/2007, ssee the Gatewatch Report for CON-067 "Operation Hixton Down", be advised that the repairs to the Gate Tower's alarm and defence systems remain outstanding due to the installation and configuration work to the new XAD1471 equipment begun on 08/03/2007 as part of the "Project Midguard" program. The work is scheduled for completion by no later than 06/20/2008, when the new flight cycle begins with CON-71.
As SSI Inc. is the prime contractor for the XAD1471 system their staff have absolute authority during the on-going work on Floor 1 of RGHQ-51. With the exception of the related missions, the Gate Tower is for the duration of this operation strictly off limits to ALL UNMC personnel. Note that with the exception of flights using the XAD1471, only a basic flight service is available for your missions during CON-68. Flight crews MUST take extra special care in the Gate Tower as many systems remain exposed (6kv) for on-going repairs and the installation work. It is not practical to shut these sub-systems down, as they constitute essential components of the XAD1471 and the Gatewatch systems. We can not emphasise this enough, a third SSI engineer was fatally injured last week due to their negligence.
All signal spikes on the Gatewatch system are at energy levels 6× above normal, that is an increase of 20% over those recorded at CON'-67. The Gate Tower's Gravity Wave detector is likewise picking up stronger signals, which means that the Gate is once again "leaking" gravity. Thus as per CON-67 we can not garuntee crew safety within the wormhole. "G" suits will be issued to Flight Crews to aid in reducing the risks of black outs in flight. Please be aware these are standard USAF and RAF issue Anti-G suits which are only rated to 9G (the max for fast jet aircrews). Note that any personnel who fail their medical, will automatically lose Flight Status for the duration of CON-68, and be asigned to Ground Crew duties, so as to avoid unnecessary casualties. Be aware that during CON-67 the Russian and American Regiments operating from SITE-54 (Russia) only suffered 1 KIA and 3 WIA due to the in-flight G forces, which is a reduction over the previous operation, presumedly resulting from the additional training post CON-66.
During CON-67 the aggregate total of ABC recovered from off-world equipment achieved a total of +217% over the pre-CON-52 levels (100%), which is an increase of +9% over those of CON-66. The total M1 ABC level now stands at 316%, that is in excess of tripple the volume detected prior to CON-52 Operation Bannockburn 03/4-6/2005. For only the second time the recovered levels of the M2 type of ABC has also increased by a factor of ×3 over the pre CON-66 levels, which is an increase of 50% over CON-67. See the ABC Saturation Report by Captain Kira Lewis (RGHQ-51).
Consequencially the precautionary principal dictates that CON-68 will be subject to the EXTREME ABC Protection Protocol, as levels are expected to be dangerously high off world. A new and improved NBC suit and filter system will be issued. Note that it will be necesary for all exterior gear to be removed for decontamination immediately upon return, to ensure personal and collective safety post flight - WITHOUT EXCEPTION! Room 208 has been specially adapted for this purpose. CON-68 will like CON-67 before it conclude with a 10 day mandatory "lock down" pending a full medical and equipment inspection/decontamination at each of our operational facilities. We at Gatewatch apologise for the inconvenience and thank you for your co-operation in maintaining bio-security.
1. Both US bases remain off-line and are not expected to be operational again until 06/20/2008. The UK and Russian Federation bases are the only currently operational Star Gate fasilities, consequentially AREA-52 personnel will be operating from SITE-54 in the Russian Federation during CON-68.
2. The US CLEGG ("CONTACT Long Endurance Gate Group") program remains suspended, and caution is advised if approached off-world by the members of the outstanding team -652. These personnel should be recovered and returned to AREA-52 ASAP. Their Authentication code is "BOSTON", and the details of the team members are specified in the current Missing In Action listings document. In addition to the strategic objectives established by the current situation, namely, Project Midguard, and the on going issues arising from Fort Apache (VXC105), the recovery of the missing UNMC Engineers and CLEGG-652 for enterogation is a high priority objective.
3. At 15:14Z today, an incoming off-world comunications signal from survivors of the 51st UNMC Engineer Company was received requesting that the XAD1471 be activated for a return flight and the defensive iris opened. Post varification, MAJ Atherton O/C in lieu of LTC Collinwood who went MIA during the outbound flight, was unaware that they had experienced a tempral delay in their journey to C068W. Upon initial arrival they were unable to establish communications with RGHQ-51, and therefore proceded with their mission. Being completed, they successfully established comunications with RGHQ-51 to make a flight request as per SOP. It was eventually decided to retreive the unit with a XAD1471 Forced Gate Activation at 17:00. They landed at 17:31 and have been despatched to DSTL for analysis. NB: 23 members including the C/O were lost on the outbound flight and 4 more on the return. These 27 remain listed as MIA as of today. The unit's default Authentication Code is "ANGEL".
NB: be aware that due to their reduced personnel the dug-out defences of FORT BIFROST although essentially complete, are necessarily of a very basic nature.
4. During the specified times (see chart) of CON-68, the SSI Inc. engineers can, upon receipt of a written authorisation from the Operations Officer, program the XAD1471 system for a launch and a retreval flight to/from G-0799 (aka C068W), the location of FORT BIFROST. NB: the XAD1471 system will only function during a standard Gate cycle period (circa 3 days in 60), and require circa 24 hours of pre flight charging. The Ground Crew can then force the Gate to open to G-0799 and RGHQ-51 respectively. It can only be safely used by prior arrangement at a specified time or when the inter-planetary comunications systems are working adequately, so that an authorised request by the off-world team can be processed to activate the Gate and open the iris to ensure a safe landing. A 35+ minute window of opportunity is required in the natural Gate cycle to allow for flight time, and the earlier the Gatewatch crew are advised of an intended launch or recovery mission the safer it will be for the SG team. NB: the short notice given by the Engineers, did result in losses. During Operation Winchester BIFROST must be reconnoitred, and the work of the Engineers assessed for the purposes of developing the base in future cycles.
END OF SPECIAL ORDERS
Gatewatch reports that as of 16:00Z there are a total of 51 fully developed inbound and outbound wormholes for CON-68, however only 12 of these, as specified below are relevant to UNMC Flight Crews. FYI this is an increase of 18 activations over the 33 of CON-67, and there are no unresolved signal spikes at this time.
Notes: All times in this table are in ZULU Time, for UK winter time. Please be aware that friendly forces off world, maybe operating in a different time zone. Gate activation entries shown in red were NOT used during this operation.

Personal Report
We deployed through the gate after a rough trip out, with some reordering of the line of march. Carter’s squad took point, and we advanced.
After less than 30m some structures became visible in the woods, along with several lights. Carter took his squad into the wood, while we remained slightly behind. On further analysis, Carter took his squad with white light, and moved through the suspect area, with my squad providing flank support slightly higher up the hill.
The lights were dead man’s beacons, with an additional white light on a box in the hollow. There were 2 bodies in a hollow, with a third one on the upper edge. The figure out of the hollow had killed himself with a grenade launcher to the neck/face, and had a support weapon by his side. One of the figures in the hollow had tied feet, and the other had a gun. Adjacent was a box with a light on top, plus a document.
Brannigan went into the hollow, and collapsed, falling unconscious within seconds. After a minute or so Petrov managed to pull Brannigan out using webbing, but did pass out. I left my team to guard my 180 degree arc facing further into the woods. Petrov then retrieved the document.
I lassoed the box with some rope, and managed to turn it over, revealing it was full of gloop, and had a loose lid. I abandoned any further attempt to retrieve the box.
Carter had set up the defensive perimeter in his arc, which I had checked. It proved to provided inadequate warning, when without warning a support weapon opened up from behind us, along with the assailant saying “get off our world, and I won’t kill you all. Kelley, and several others were hit in the initial assault, and went down. The assailant’s firing was not of the finest quality, allowing me to get to Kelley, and pull her back. I directed Standford to patch her up and get her on her feet. Under further poorly directed support weapon fire, I moved left, and fell to a flanking assault from in front of me. I was briefly roused by Kelley, albeit with extreme pain from two unpatched extremities, when another burst ended my involvement for the mission. I was revived kicking and screaming in medbay.
In the confusion of the battle, the sheet of information I had stowed in one of my pouches was lost.
I read the first paragraph before deciding that I had little time there and then for further reading. My memory of it is that it was a type I post action report from the previous mission cycle, commenting on how their intelligence was a little out, but still very useful.

After Action Reports:
Arrived onworld and we split into two teams. Col. Rhys elected to stay by the gate to defend our rear, while I took Bravo fire team to find our base. We only had a general description of where the engineers had dug it and command had told us it was imperative we confirm its location and readiness. Being that it was night and all, this was easier said and done, and we had failed to find base after two sweeps through the area. At this point we heard a truck coming towards the area, and elements of my team thought they had spotted movement in the woods adjacent to where we were.
In desperation I made a third sweep of the general location and I was able to locate the trenches that the engineers had dug using my tactical torch to illuminate the area. We called Alpha and told them where we were, and guided them in using lights. We then saw more lights and this signaled the beginning of an assault on our base by what appeared to be Type 1 forces.
An exchange of opinions took place between the machine gunners. I took a sortie out to challenge hostiles who were trying to infiltrate our defences, which resulted in both Petrov and Newman being wounded, but the enemy were unwilling to engage up close and personal, and withdrew. Had they known that my gun had jammed no doubt they would have made us their bitches. Various explosions occurred during the assault, but I took Bravo team and sallied over the top of our defenses to sweep the area, securing the enemy bodies and retrieving their weapons and explosives. We came home without further untoward incidents.
XO Summary.
We went, we killed, we returned with the bodies of our enemies (see DSTL Report). We discovered that they are making conventional explosives and manufacturing ammunition for their weapons. We hate them.
Intelligence Summary: Standard Arborial world. 1 squad member sufferred delayed insertion onto world but was unharmed. Multiple contacts found and engaged. 1 prisoner returned (type 2?). Specialist equipment deployed - the gravitometer. the Stargazer was not deployed owing to the short on world duration.
We arrived on world, to find the standard world type, with woods all around. After a quick rollcall Brannigan was found to be missing. After a brief conference with Col Tachikoma, we moved off on our recon mission, with Bravo leading, alpha bring up the rear with me as tail end charlie. We made a brisk sweep approx 1.5km deep into the woods in a valley, following a small stream in the bottom down stream. At the furthest penetration, I collected water and soil samples (see DSTL Report).
On our return on the other side of the valley and after hearing a gate activation, contact was made with an unknown, who after following standard procedures, was determined to be Brannigan. He was none the worse for his brief subjective time loss experience of approx 30 mins in the gate system.
We turned away from the main valley, and made our way up a side valley, and around to some marginally higher ground. After some reports from my squad of sporadic weapon discharges contact was made in the side valley. Tachikoma, and bravo moved to intercept and assault, whilst I move Bravo to a blocking and flanking position on the higher ground. Some more reports of poorly directed incoming fire were made at this time. Bravo and Tachikoma dealt with the hostiles in summary fashion, without alpha being needed for additional support. Determination of hostiles type II or III nature wasn't absolute, but the suspicion was of type IIs.
We then carried on the higher land on the other side of the valley until we reached the gate area again. we moved out to patrol between the two previous routes further down the valley. With about 10 minutes to gate out, and with some evidence of movement and sporadic firing from near the gate, I was ordered to aggressively patrol back to the gates, with Bravo and Tachikoma taking the high route.
Contact was made approximately half way back to the gate, with hostiles up the far side of the valley. I crossed the stream with my squad, and evaded towards the gate. This appeared to cause some equally rapid movement on the enemies part, and from our position approx 100m from the gate, 3 hostiles were seem taking position near the gate. I determined that my force was insufficient for the an assault, and awaited the reappearance on the opposite of bravo squad. When they appeared on the skyline, 2 of the hostiles moved out from the gate area to intercept.
I took this unexpected movement, and the sound of some action from across the stream as a signal to prosecute my orders against the remaining hostile on my side of the stream. With able support from my squad the hostile was supressed, and I managed to execute a successful assault and moved through the position. Given the proximity to gate out time I ordered Brannigan to maintain a type III suppression strategy until the gate cycled. I wheeled to check whether our support was required to assist Bravo, but they seemed to have events under control.
We exited the gate, with one hostile not neutralised, but the incoming fire caused no casualties. We arrived back at base, with one type II prisoner. Carter acquired a minor arm wound from a still live M60 (it was being used to suppress the enemy during our exfiltration).
Enemy strength - 2 x type IIs - 1 captured
c. 3 - 4 type Is - 3 neutralised, but will
probably gate walk in time + 1 still active
Tactical analysis - there was no cooperation between the type Is and IIs.
The Type I group was possibly split into a 3 and 1 acting more indepently.
The type I plan seemed somewhat disjointed, and was defeated in detail by UNSGC squads. The support gun was especially useful in changing the force ratios when 2+ type Is were engaged by Bravo and Tachikoma.
Strategic analysis - There was the ominous sound of fully fledged worm action in the distance. We must presume that this world has been or is in the process of being wormed.
Additional information sought - Did the gravitometer register any abnormal gravity reading not consistent with a gate opening in the time before the gate opened?

After Action Report.
The team arrived onworld without the presence of Pfc. Brannigan to grace our mission, but we commenced a sweep of the area without him. I took the squad on a sweep of the area, and we found a spot that was good for taking samples. We heard the gate activate in the distance and Pfc.
Brannigan then turned up. Afterwards we met two Type 2s, one of whom we toasted with a T23-ID, while capturing the other for processing. Then we ran into three Type 1s while extracting ourselves off planet during our final gate activation. We toasted the enemy in the process of exfiltrating through the gate, but were unable to retrieve the enemy Type 1s that we had pacified due to incoming fire from the third hostile.
XO Summary.
World being eaten by worms. Type 2s hunting, Type 1s fleeing and screaming like girls they were.

SUBJECT: PRELIMINARY REPORT ON SLUGS RETRIEVED DURING CON-67
This is a note to advise that the Urainium 235 "slugs" recovered during CON-67 are not quite what they appear to be. They are perfect "replicas" of the kind of U235 slug required for a cannon style nuclear weapon. Externally they are the precise size as specified by the T1 engineers, unlike one of the captured batches which was under sized. These are to an initial examination pure HEWG U235, demonstrating excellent workmanship. However, upon detailed examination the neutron emitions were felt to be a little below what we would expect for the mass. The slugs were dissected, and we discovered that the inner core was made of lead. Although with basic equipment it is impossible to distinguish these from the "real" thing, these slugs are incapable of achieving a critical mass when combined with their core counterpart within the weapon casing.
We can only conclude that the manufacturer was engaged in subterfuge, by deceiving their client with the submission of these fake munitions. Purpose and motives unknown.
A full report is to follow.

MESSAGES START: Date 10-13-07 COPY 5 OF 6 1. REPORT ON CONTACT ON 0799: Our intelligence on the gate times and expected route used by the UNSGC personnel for the September cycle seems to have been slightly off, we initially missed the patrol’s arrival. We maintained surveilence but were only able to acquire 2 photos during their return to the 799 gate. The quality is poor and you can barely make out the apparently standard procedure of using a small number of operatives to cover the exit through the gate. Unfortunately as these pictures were taken we were spotted and came under fire. Against orders we returned fire and they left through the gate. After three days slow progress we eventually arrived at base, had the shots printed and briefed 6 couriers for dispatch to Ft.Apache during the next cycle in November. To date we have no evidence of establishment of any permanent facilities here. We suggest the intel is not A1 as originally marked. 2. RESPONSE RE THE FIND: Yes Dr Peter Sheldon agrees with your palaeontological team, as he has found numerous examples of stromatolite fossiles on other worlds, along with later species. He requests an opportunity to study with Professor Weldon on Phoenix, as the nearest thing he has seen to a live colony are the Shark Bay examples. But these are like those in the Antarctic lakes, small and primative. He would like the chance to see these massive structures for himself and contribute to our understanding of them before their protective seperation. Like him I also believe that this would enable us to confirm our historical model and their perceived objectives, essential in the light of what is to come. He also agrees that their size (320km long) is connsistant with those found elsewhere some 2BYA-600MYA. Sheldon is in communications with other palaeontological teams and is co-ordinating Weldons request for significant fossile finds to be delivered to him. However, due to the impending sessation of gate travel until June, it will be impossible to comply until at least then. Finally Sheldon concurs that a copy of Gould's book should be acquired as an essential primer. 3. PRIORITY SUPPLIES: As stated in our previous messages, we still need a supply of 6mm MKVII, as our stocks of MkVI is almost exhausted. Manufacture of LE is proceeding well, but we still need a replacement chemist for the HE and propellants, as these are beyond our remaining engineers knowledge. We estimate that it will be aleast a year before we have the desired capability. Do NOT critiscise this as it is in line with the progress of other colonies. Finally and most urgently we need at least 2 doctors, preferably one should be a surgeon and the other a gynaecologist/obstetrician as we are also continuing to fail to bring to term, resulting in unnecessary premature fatalities in our female population. We need prophylactics not abstinence lectures. Ed.Colonel Alice Ward C/O Ft. Sioux. MESSAGE ENDS 5 OF 6. |
