U.N. Special Forces PFT
&
The Personal Fitness Test

Introduction

The Corps recognises two fitness tests, one is formally supervised, and serves as part of the entry requirements for assignment to Special Forces, the other being the self administered Personal Fitness Test used by all other personnel.

Special Forces Physical Fitness Test (SFPFT)

If you wish to apply to serve as an operator as part of the U.N. Special Forces, you will be subjected to a supervised Physical Fitness Test as part of your entrance requirements:

To qualify as an SF operator you must EVERY year satisfy the following:

  • You must already be a serving U.N. Marine, with a rank of not less than Private First Class. That is you must have taken part in at least one off-world mission and have a minimum of 12 Expert Infantry Course Units (EICU's), also known as a Bootcamp, and:
  • You must pass the annual Special Forces Physical Fitness Test (SFPFT), conducted under strict supervision, prior to assignment or reassignment to the SF Branch Of Service (BOS). Marines serving in the SF branch will, if they fail their annual SFPFT, be Returned To Unit (RTU), that is, be returned to their previous branch assignment, or to the Infantry, as appropriate.

The test comprises a 7,000 metre (7,655 yard) assault course with 60 obsticles, and is held on the last Sunday in May of each year.

Contact the office of your Regiment's commander for details and an application form.

The Personal Fitness Test (PFT)

The following data is for your personal use only, as UNSGC Ground Crew and Flight Crew are not subject to any mandatory supervised fitness tests. This is because as a member of what is regarded as a tier one (strategic) unit, whether in an Active or Reserve capacity, you are deemed to be responsible for your own personal level of health and fitness.

The listed data is based upon the US Army's Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT), which is similar to those used in other branchs of service and other national forces around the world.

The PFT is a three element event used to assess muscular and cardio respiratory endureance. The three standard elements of the PFT are:

  • Part A: 2 Minutes of Push-Ups: measuring the endurance of the arms and upper torso.
  • Part B: 2 Minutes of Sit-Ups: measuring the endurance of the lower torso.
  • Part C: 2 Mile Run (3,219 metres): which tests aerobic and leg muscle endurance.

Without exception the test sequence as specified above cannot be changed. Participants are allowed not less than 10 minutes, and no more than 20, to recover between each event. Therefore the PFT MUST be completed within one hour, seven minutes and forty eight seconds to be valid. As a general guide you should allow yourself a two hour window for the conduct of the PFT.

Requirements

  • A T-shirt (or equivalent) and optional underwear. A sports bra for female personnel is recommended.
  • A pair of lightweight shorts or your standard Battle Dress Uniform (BDU) combat trousers (with or without belt)
  • A pair of running shoes (trainers) and a pair of lightweight Socks. Combat boots are NOT recommended, but are authorised for use.
  • You should have a minimum of 2x500ml of water and 2 energy bars (or equivalent), half of which should be stowed at the principle PFT venue for use during Parts A and B of the test, while the remainder must be put aside for use at the conclusion of Part C.
  • The optional wearing of a hat, cap or bandana, and sunglasses in bright weather is also authorised.
  • A watch: required to time yourself.
  • And finally a pen and notebook in which to record your results.

No reductions in pass marks are allowed for additional clothing or kit.

Optional Supervised PFT

If you or your Chief Medical Officer have any doubts or concerns for your well being during the conduct of the PFT, then you MUST not perform a private test, rather you should request a supervised one.

For the standard PFT the supervisors requirements are:

  • A senior supervisor must be appointed to co-ordinate and be present at the test. They must be equipped with a radio, pen, notepad and a copy of this  Checklist  and a roster of candidates. This roster must be prepared in advance, with the required score/time for each candidate listed, so a simple PASS/FAIL can be issued immediately upon completion. The results should be confirmed upon return to base (RTB).
  • A minimum of one qualified and appropriately equipped Field Medic (First Aider) per twelve candidates must be present. They may NOT be assigned any other duties during the test.
  • A minimum of one driver and one vehicle per twelve candidates must be present. They may NOT be assigned any other duties during the test, as they may be required to ferry a casualty to a hospital.
  • A minimum of one score keeper per twelve candidates, to record all results must be present. They may NOT be assigned any other duties during the test. As a paper record is required, the score keeper must have a pen and notepad sufficient to the number of candidates. An electronic substitute is NOT authorised, but may serve in addition to the hard copy.
  • For the push-ups and sit-ups, a spotter for each candidate is required. This can be run sequencially and the candidates can spot for one another, so as to minimise staff requirements.
  • For the two mile (3,219 metres) run, the minimum distance between check points must be no more than one mile (1,610 metres). On days exceeding 27°C (80°F), then the minimum distance between check points must NOT exceed one half mile (805 metres).
  • The senior supervisor must ensure that an additional 3 litres of water per candiddate is to be available at the finish and at each check point. This should be made available to all at the end of the test if not used. Disposable paper cups should be used to preserve hygene if a common source is employed.
  • Each check point must have a minimum of one person equipped with a radio, and who is then responsible for the store and distribution of water. If numbers permit, then designated water bearers should be assigned to each check point, at a rate of at least one per twelve candidates.

Scoring The PFT

Fitness is expressed as a score determined by converting the raw performance for each event to a points value. The performance itself is listed at the far left of each table (red), and the points values are found in the body of the table, under columns defined by age and gender.

There are three PFT pass marks.

  • Special Forces Operator: minimum of 70 points per event (210+ points total)
  • Flight Crew: minimum of 60 points per event (180+ points total) *
  • Ground Crew (or those in initial entry training): minimum of 50 points per event (150+ points total) *

* Remember that by definition, if you are reading this you are presumed to have already passed all the necessary mandatory fitness tests for serving as either a member of the Ground or Flight crews, but if you have any questions, contact your regiments CO (Commanding Officer) and CMO (Chief Medical Officer). In either case you should consult with your personal doctor and trainer re any fitness related issues for further assistance.

For convenience those for the SF pass mark are highlighted in blue for males, pink for females, and black for gender neutral, all others are grey.

NB: For guidance use only, you will find below the tables for the PFT imformation related to your maximum permitted weight and body fat percentages by height, plus conversion charts for both US/Imperial and Metric measures.

The PFT

Part A: Push-Ups

To make use of this chart, first find the column for your Age Group and Gender, then scroll down until you see the relevant score for your assignment: 50 for Ground Crew, 60 for Flight Crew, or 70 for Special Forces. Next, go to the column at the far left (red), where you will find the number of Push-Ups you will need to perform in 2 minutes to pass this element of the test. For example if you are between the ages of 27 and 31 and Female, you must do at least 27 Push-Ups within the required two minutes to qualify as an SF operator.

Part B: Sit-Ups

Note that there is no differencial between male and female subjects for this element of the PFT.

To make use of this chart, first find the column for your Age Group, then scroll down until you see the relevant score for your assignment: 50 Ground Crew, 60 Flight Crew, or 70 for Special Forces). Next, go to the column at the far left (red), where you will find the number of Sit-Ups you will need to perform within the required two minutes to pass this element of the test. For example: If you are between the ages of 32 and 36 and you are trying to pass the SF score of 70, then you must do at least 51 Sit-Ups within the required two minutes. Note here that the actual pass score is "71" for this age group, this is not an error.

Conversion Charts

The charts below are the normal requirements of the regular US Army, to what is the maximum permissible weight and body fat percentages by height. However the special needs of the UNMC and especially the UNSGC dictate that these can not be applied to U.N. Marines, and therefore these requirements are provided here as information for personal guidance only, and you should consult with your doctor for a more accurate personalised set of goals.

To determine your correct weight, check your height in the left hand collum of the chart for your Gender and then move across the rows to the collum for your Age Group to find your maximum permitted weight. Note that for each height there are two specified weight values. The row for Prior is for those with "prior" military service. The other row gives the maximum permitted weight at the conclusion of basic training for new recruits. The final chart regarding allowable body fat percentages, is self explanatory.

Your height and weight should be measured while wearing the minimum of clothing and when barefoot. For these measurements you should be standing upon a flat surface with your chin parallel to the floor, in a posture similar to the position of attention. The measurements should be rounded to the nearest inch/pound with the following guidelines:

  • If the height fraction is less than 1/2 inch, round down.
  • If the height fraction is 1/2 inch or greater, round up.
  • Your weight should be measured and recorded to the nearest pound.
  • Add 6 pounds per inch if male and 5 pounds per inch if female, if you are over 80 inches tall.
  • For metric records, use the conversion charts below.
