The inside of our European tent at Military Odyssey in 2013. It has been decked out to resemble a Japanese room. On the floor are six 2" (50mm) thick straw mats, called TATAMI, which are supported underneath by wooden planks, to raise them above any rain water that might flow under the walls.
At the left can be seen two black wooden chests, called HITSU, the universal storage unit of the medieval Japanese. Behind them at the back you can also see a storage basket. Ideal to get your property out of the house in the event of earthquake and fire! Here they house our bedding and other personal kit, and yes we sleep overnight on the TATAMI, very comfortable. In the foreground on the TATAMI (mats), you can see a GO board, an ancient, quick to learn, but a lifetime to master kind of a game. You can see the two pots that hold the black and white pieces to it's left. And behind the board is a tray, with tea cups and a candle stick. BTW the big red pole at the heart of the image holds the roof up! |
