Expert Infantry Course #12

March 30-April 1 2007

As all those present had previously attended at least two earlier boot camps, this year's course comprised more in depth study and advanced material. The total number of possible Expert Infantry Course Units (EICU) was 17 as follows:

Friday: An indoor unit covering military radio procedure. It was felt that more time than was available should be devoted to this subject. Therefore during this years combat operations time will be put aside for all radio operators to attend classes and radio exercises. 2 EICU.
Saturday: A "warm-up" refresher unit on assault by fire and manoeuvre and flank attack upon a strong point. 4 EICU.
Saturday: An outdoor unit on safe withdrawl under fire into a secured position. Starting with a hostile pursuit in a confined corridor of retreat, forming a base of fire, then retreat by bounds until the pursuing enemy came within the effective range of the support team in the secured position armed with two M249 LMGs. At which point the withdrawing unit moved into rapid retreat in single file, keeping to their agreed lane, and not entering the support fire lane, enabling the support team to suppress the enemy. The retreating team members would then integrate themselves upon arrival in to the base of fire alongside the LMGs, to add their firepower to the defence. 3 EICU.
Saturday: Night fighting in an urban environment. 4 EICU.
A repeat of Saturday's withdrawl under fire exercise. 3 EICU.
Sunday: Fire support exercise. This was not as successful as it could have been due to a shortage of ammunition and weapons failures, but a good learning experience. 1 EICU.

Notes:

Unfortunately four Marines dropped out on the Friday due to
unforeseen circumstances.

Special thanks go to Captain Nikki Swift and Lieutenant Colonel Ashley Pollard
who performed excellently during a First Aid inncident wherein
Sergeant Trevor Smith sustained what fortunately turned out to be a minor
injury during the Fire SupportExercise on Sunday, when his foot
became trapped in a rabbit hole while running.
