Gatewatch Report
Issued @ 19:45hrs on 07/10/2005
Contrary to recent Gate behavior CON39-CON-52, the latter being "Operation Bannockburn" conducted on March 4-6 2005, Operation Edington is following the same pattern as per CON-53 Operation Baden Hill, May 20-22 2005, in that we have detected an even larger number of Gate activations for this operation, compared to that of the previous, a total of 1,327, as opposed to the 1,109 of CON-53. This is by far the largest number of signals detected in any of the preceding normal 48 hour cycles. This is inconsistent with the wave pattern previously seen, where in the number of activations from one cycle to another have oscillated between a moderately low figure and a steadily increasing one, but with a very large differential. This no longer appears to be an aberration, being indicative of an additional change in Gate behavior as seen over the last three operations.
These activations cover the period 07/10/05 (21:29)-10/10/05 (00:44). Of these only 29 are actually viable, falling during 07/10--09/10. All of which have been designated as Pathfinder missions, with the exception of one (VP888A).
During CON-52 & CON-53 US and Russian crews suffered a number of serious casualties due to extremely rough and unpredictable in-flight experiences. There is every reason to expect similar conditions during CON-55, due to the high frequency and very strong amplitude of the Gate's signal spikes. Great caution is especially recommended in respect to those Gates connected to UP818A, which are displaying an only once before seen trait (CON-53), that is the outbound and inbound Flight Times are not consistent. Upon the last occasion this seemed to have little if any effect upon crews executing jumps, however this may not be so during CON-55. As before great caution and firm flight discipline is essential to prevent injuries, damage or loss of personnel and or equipment during this operation.
Gatewatch 50, 52 and 54 are in the present operational cycle, all reporting a similar level of activity, with very few useful, yet incredibly strong well resolved signal spikes. There is still no data from Stargate-53 for comparison at this time. The French government has, for the moment, suspended all attempts at re-activating BASE-53, and are instead dispatching personnel to either the UK, USA or Russian facilities to continue their service under these Commands.
During CON-53 there was a 17% increase in the mass of ABC extracted from off-world combat equipment (NBC suits, respirator filters etc). Although this currently remains within the safety limitations, a precautionary upgrade has been undertaken at all bases to maximize protection for all personnel. However, if a similar increase is detected during CON-55, this would exceed even the upgrades capability. As such data can only be procured post operationally it has been decided that CON-55 will conclude with a mandatory "lock down" pending a full inspection/decontamination of each operational facility.. If the results are positive, as a precaution CON-56 will be subject to Extreme ABC Protection Protocols (normally only used when the Gate Room detectors register dangerous levels of ABC in the atmosphere). Additional NBC suits and filters will be provided at that time.
It still remains unknown how many REGION-55 (SG#55/People's Republic of China) survivors are actually currently stranded off world, with the exception of those listed as MIA (see the last Issue No.50 of the MIA listings). Extreme caution is recommended when dealing with such personnel, due to inevitable long duration exposure to ABC (09/09/04). No further data is expected from the PRC's UNSGC elements at this time.
The PRC's negotiations with Japan and Russia re its future contribution to the CONTACT program continue. The PRC are considering the French solution, so we may have Chinese and Japanese personnel assigned to RGHQ-51 at some point in the future. We will keep you apprised as the situation develops.
The following "Details of usable gates" include the post-operational corrections. Information in brackets () is the original projected data where it differs from the actual facts:

Report on Pathfinder Mission to UP976G on 08/10/2005
Our gate arrived at approximately 11:17am. The transit was extremely rough. The best description I can give is that it felt like different parts of my body were being pulled in several directions at once. Most members of the team were violently ill and/or had uncontrollable bowel movements. Once everyone had recovered we proceeded away from the gate in a 9-10 o'clock direction. There was a slight incline running from right to left where it met a small stream (We were walking parallel with the stream) Myself, Rivington and Carter each carried part of the stargazer device. We proceeded several hundred yards and set up the devices. Carter at the top of the hill, Rivington in the middle and myself at the bottom of the hill. The team was deployed in a defensive formation and the Stargazer device was activated.
As it would take a couple of hours to run it's sequence, Lt Stone decided that four of us would scout the immediate area. Stone, O'Malley, Church and myself headed out across the stream and up the other side of the valley. We found a small village of lean-to shelters at the top of the hill and small lake to our right. Upon finding no one at the village, we proceeded around the lake. When we were on our way back, we were just approaching a small settlement of makeshift shelters (hastily constructed pyramids approximately six feet high) and we got a radio transmission from Carter who was still guarding the Stargazer unit. He said that they had made contact with someone. Soon after this we heard gunfire and the radio went silent. We proceeded through the pyramid village (the stargazer was set up approximately 100 yards the other side of the village)
When we were about halfway across this field of pyramids, we spotted three figures moving towards us from the direction of the stargazer. They were dressed in standard combats and carried a variety of weaponry. One of the contacts was carrying a Dragunov rifle and was calling, "You speak Russian?" repeatedly in Russian. Stone ordered me to communicate with them. I called to them and ordered them to stop where they were. I was ignored and they proceeded to advance - a line abreast approximately two metres apart. On the left was one carrying a P90, then the Dragunov and I couldn't see the third one who would have been visible to Stone, Church and O'Malley.
By this stage, I was standing behind one of the pyramids. Stone was about three metres to my right, O'Malley and Church were the other side of him. My memories of the next few seconds are a little hazy, but I think I requested permission to fire from Stone. The contacts were getting very close now (less than 20 feet) and were still repeating the same Russian phrases.
Stone gave the order at about 10 feet. I remember squeezing the trigger and my weapon jamming. As I ducked down behind the pyramid I heard Stone scream and felt something impact on my respirator. I started to black out and felt something impact in my back.
I remember regaining consciousness with O'Malley fumbling at some bandages around my head and torso. He told me that when Stone had gone down, and the enemy carrying the Dragunov refused to fall over, he and Church had decided that a tactical withdrawal was in order. Church had returned to the gate to go back and organise a rescue party. O'Malley had stayed behind and evaded the type 3 and it's flanking type 2s. Armed with nothing more than a knife and a type 3 incapacitation device he single handedly picked up his fallen comrades (including the team guarding the stargazer) and healed the merely unconscious ones (fortunately, that included myself)
Once I was up and about, I helped O'Malley to collect together our fallen and set up in a defensive position at the back of the field. We couldn't find either Stone or Rivington. It looks like the type 3 took them, although those things must be very strong as he must have been carried (no drag marks) O'Malley then headed out again to retrieve his kit that he had stashed so he could move around more silently and to draw off any further incoming contacts.
The rescue party arrived. Albeit about seven minutes late (the gates are not acting right) and helped recover/heal the rest of the party (Carter, Branigan, Lopez) We could find no trace of Stone or Rivington. And we could only find two thirds of the Stargazer equipment (Carter made a mad dash back to grab the remaining equipment about 45 seconds before gate out!) When we were preparing to head out towards the gate, at least three contacts appeared and started advancing upon our position. Col Rhys ordered the injured to stay back whist his team engaged and took down the advancing type 2s. It all seemed very efficient. Aiken was stationed up the hill on the left sniping anything that moved. The rest of the team were laying down covering fire to keep the type 2s busy.
From what I understand, O'Malley was on the far right at the bottom of the hill when the engagement took place and was advancing whilst firing at the type 2 bodies on the floor to stop them getting back up. It was at this stage that one of the Americans (Schmidt I believe) decided to shoot him in the face. The rest of the mission went off without any further 'events'.
Everyone (including the unconscious O'Malley) were moved back to the Stargate. And we were treated to another gut wrenching journey back through.
In my opinion, engagement protocols need to be reviewed and re-iterated. Those slow moving type 2s and the type 3 should never have been able to get the drop on two SG teams (Stargazer and scout team) Also, I may only be a PFC, but I'd like to recommend PFC Bruce O'Malley for some kind of commendation.
