Gatewatch Report

OPERATION HASTINGS

October 26-27 1996

BACKGROUND: This was the first recorded CONTACT operation wherein engagements with hostile forces took place. For 6 days preceeding the operation itself, communications with the New Greenham Common base (XC105A) had been lost. As this was the largest and oldest off-world colony, established in 1966, and with over 1,000 personnel on its staff thirty years later, there was considerable concern. Recon and SAR teams were put on stand-by, and on the night of October 26th, the missions began. The base was found to be almost entirely abbandoned. The handful of survivors reported that all it's 73 buildings had been stripped, right down to the wiring, fixtures and fittings by the base's own personnel and shipped to an unknown destination through the Star Gate. The missing personnel had become casualties as a result of what could only be described as deliberate exposure to a very large quantity of concentrated liquid ABC (circa 20 litres). The subsequent enquirery concluded that there had been no external forces involved, and initial contamination was presumed as accidental. Consequently, these personnel who formed the backbone of the hostile forces subsequentially engaged ever since in off-world missions have been declared as MIA/POW pending their retrieval and medical ascessment. A 20l container of this previously unknown liquid form of ABC was recovered for analysis (see DSTL Report), while another was left behind. Presumibly falling into hostile hands. Thus providing the enemy with enough agent to contaminate up to a further 1,000 personnel. Flight operations cease some ten hours after commencement, with the losses as specified in the roster below.

Intelligence Summary: See Gatewatch report above.

After Action Reports:

Mr Malcom Graddie BSc, MA.

TOP SECRET

Date: 29-08-96 [Admin note - this mission was actually held on 27/10/96]

We arrived at C105A at approximately 0005 27-08-96 [27/10/96]. The base was abandoned, no sign of life, some areas heavily overgrown. Doctor Wright assumed command and formed a course of action, to search the base for survivors, any useful supplies and any information on what had occurred here.  The search would concentrate on areas most likely to hold these items e.g. HQ, security, medical section etc. She also arranged a recognition signal for the party, so that if we became separated we would be able to identify one another and rendezvous point if we became lost.

We commenced our search with Lab 1, found it completely stripped and moved on.

In the vicinity of Building 53 we had an encounter with hostile forces. Movement was sighted on the first floor and our two privates moved in to investigate.  They came under fire, Pte Pattern becoming a casualty.  Doctor Forsyth receiving an arm wound.  An indecisive fire-fight developed, during this our two computer technicians attempted an outflanking movement and became separated. During a lull in firing I attempted to negotiate with the hostiles.  I explained that we were a party from Camp Alpha just trying to find out what was going on.  They identified themselves as “Colonial Marines”, on a mission which they refused to expand on.  We arranged a ceasefire in which they would evacuate the area whilst we recovered our casualty.  Up to this point we had thought ourselves to be facing two hostiles.  We were surprised to see individuals exiting the building.

We then exited briefly through the jump gate to take stock of the situation and recover our wounds.  Whilst in Base 78 we were rejoined by our computer techs.

Leaving Base 78 we headed for HQ, we found it bare and headed for Lab 2.  On our way we came under fire, I was able to talk to those firing on us.  Doctor Wright and I went forward to negotiate. They turned out to be three men led by one Hans Brewer.  They claimed to be survivors of the Base security force.  According to them, about a week ago an unknown attacking force had shown up and completely “toasted the place”.  They had with them a computer, this we presumed was the base log.  However an analysis by our computer techs was unable to tell us anything.  The security force did allude to “something” being held in secure storage in the QM stores. We set out to investigate.  On route we became separated from the survivors of the security force.

Arriving at the QM stores we located three canisters, one sealed, one sealed but leaking and one open.  Doctor Wright revealed that Mr Toyotomi had told her that Camp Delta had found some form of liquid.  Since all the containers were labelled in Japanese we felt that these now held Camp Delta’s find. Doctor Forsyth wanted these taken back to Base 78, Doctor Wright was adamant that they should not be.  It emerged that Pte Pattern could speak Japanese.  However he was missing.  One of the computer techs and I set out on a brief search to find him.  We located him with the base security force and headed back.  On route we managed to lose the base security force and gain custody of the computer log.
Pte Pattern examined the labels but was unable to tell us any more than that it was some sort of warning and that the containers were numbered 1 – 3.  This was not much of a surprise.

We left without the containers.  We encountered the Marines again and one of our Privates, Pte Cryer I believe opened fire on them.  When asked who he was shooting at he replied, “I don’t care!”  In the fire-fight I was wounded.  We held our position whilst we treated our wounded.  The Marines did not make a concerted effort to close with us and finish us off.  After a while they withdrew.  We then headed back to Base 78. Only Doctors Forsyth and Wright and I went back.  We dropped off the computer log (see DSTL report) and argued about going back for one of the containers.  This time Doctor Forsyth prevailed.  It was during this time that both of our Privates and our computer techs were killed.

We left Base 78 heading for the QM stores almost immediately we encountered the Marines.  They immediately engaged us.  Doctor Forsyth however acted promptly and throwing grenades copiously, broke contact.  We retrieved one of the containers (see DSTL Report).  With Doctor Forsyth and I carrying it between us and Doctor Wright acting as scout we successfully returned to Base 78.  It was now very close to full alignment and felt there was no point in returning to C105A.

Assessments.

  1. Base Security Forces story.  They seemed to be disturbed and the feeling amongst the party was that they were not to be trusted.  Hopefully the base log will throw more light on this.
  1. The condition of the base.  Time elapsed since receipt of radio signal reporting trouble at the base and our arrival, 6 days.  Is this sufficient time to totally strip the base and to account for the overgrown state of it?  I realise we are entering the realms of science-fiction here, but might some form of “time distortion” be in effect?
  1. Colonial Marines.  No comment on mission or their nationality.
  1. Doctor Forsyth.  Very competent militarily, very aggressive and very keen to bring home one of the containers.  Is this simple scientific curiosity or something more?  Also tended to refer to first floor of a building as the second floor.  Is this just more evidence of the encroachment of American English into our language or has Doctor Forsyth spent time in the USA?  If he has, does it tally with what we know of him?
  1. Doctor Wright.  Very competent organiser, good mixture of scientific curiosity and caution.  No indications of anything else.
  1. Other members of the party.  No indications that they were anything other than what they supposed to be.
