Item 4
Ref:ART51-CON-065.2#04AS2
Description: “Worm Skin Sample" (VXC213A & B / G-1548/G-1549): an iregularly shaped noddule of a rock like substance, measuring circa 5cm x 4cm x 3cm. Irridescent, principally purple, with gold, silver, copper green and blue shading, see images below:
Analysis: Upon initial viewing the resident geologists thought that the team had brought back an example of so-called "Peacock-ore" or possibly Chalcopyrite or Bornite. After examination, it was realised that this was not so, as the irridescent colouring, unlike the afore mentioned ores was more than one atom deep. Also the density (mass over volume) was significantly too high for such an ore, which would normally contain about 63% copper plus other elements, typically producing a Specific Gravity (SG) not exceeding circa 8gcm3), rather than what it was, that is just over 20gcm3), which is consistent with it's content.
A sample was prepared with unexpected difficulty for testing with GCMS (Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometer) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance.
The "difficulty" was explain by the presence of one element, one that does not submit to normal analysis, being identified as the so-called "Light Iron", being the exotic element from which Star Gates are made (see the table and the notes below)***.
The material is a crystalline lattice structure, composing several Fullerines, composed of carbon and "light-iron", inter-laced with several heavy metals and other elements rendering it exceptionally dense, durable and disproportionately strong.
One of our engineers hypothesised that such a "skin" would serve as an armoured shell that would not only have the ability to absorb large amounts of high energy neutron radiation (X-rays, Gamma rays etc), it would also, via several super-conducting elements be capable of handling ultra high electrical charges at low tempretures.
It has been conjectured that the super-conducting elements may provide an additional EM (Electromagnetic) component to provide an active potential to assist the fixed armour component. This would be especially effective against particles that are effected by EM fields such as those rich in iron or water etc. The combined effectiveness cannot even be guessed at. Although it has been estimated that this material in its current inactive state is 1000 times more effective than steel plate, infinitely supperior to our latest “Dorchester” vehicle armour as used on the Challenger II Main Battle Tank. This will perform better than the new nano-tech armour, production of which is about to commence in Isreal with US support sometime in 2008-'09.
In tests it was highly resistant to radiated heat, melting at just over 3,500°k despite some of it's component elements being normally vunrable at well below the 1,000°k level. It seems that it gains thermo resistant properties from amongst other things it's Fullerine sub-structure. Further protection is achieved by two means: firstly by reflecting a significant proportion of the energy outward (89% at 300°K), and by acting as a thermo-couple, converting much of the remaining heat to electrical potential. The impact of the latter component, would we think be more significant with the use of a suitable control system. The afore mentioned embedded EM component may provide additional protection in this area, but any estimate of performance would be purely speculative. Trials would need to be conducted with a "live" specimen for conclusive results.
Finally the similarity between this sample and previous recovered items (now lost - CON-56 Op.Ox-Eye) is striking, especially the surface colouring. In particular our staff recall the so-called "over-positor" found at the same location some years ago (shortly after desertification), and a second from VXC057A (Abridge) more recently, wherein the surface layer, although far thinner, was essentially identical in terms of composition. If this is so, we can suggest that the interior of the "worm" maybe like that of the "over-positor", a mixture of carbon and silicone, forming a pinkish rubber like textured core. Again, our staff recalled that when an electrical charge was applied to this "core" it exhibitted disproportional increases in it's durability, a necessary feature if the reported dimensions of the creature (AS2) are correct (15-20m diameter x 3,000m long).

Mission 4
(SG51-065.4)
This was designated by Colonel Rhys (S3) as a COMBAT MISSION.
Item 1 & 2
Ref: ART51-CON-065.4#01T0H
Ref: ART51-CON-065.4#02T0H
Two members of CLEGG-621 were recovered: SGT Albright and SGT Jones. After a thorough medical examination, both were returned to the United States via Executive Resources (ER) along with SGT Hennessy.
Item 3
Ref: ART51-CON-065.4#03INT
An obsolete 3.5" floppy disc containing 8 files, of which 2 were corruptted were in the posession of CLEGG-621. After an unsuccessfull attempt at decryption, the disc was returned to AREA-50 along with the members of CLEGG-621. NB: Colonel Rhys on first seeing the disc was heard to comment "oh, how quaint", but from what we understand, no further enquiry was made as to the reason for the use of such an obsolete medium by such an otherwise well equipped unit.
No samples or Gravitometer readings were scheduled to be taken during this mission.

Mission 5
(SG51-065.5)
Item 1
Ref: ART51-CON-065.5#01WMD
U-235 Bar": This is a "slug" of Highly Enriched Weapons Grade (HEWG) Urainium-235, precision manufactured for use in a cannon type nuclear weapon of an estimated yield in the range 4-10KT (Kilo-Tons). And is identical to the better pieces recovered last year. We do not believe that this could have been manufactured off-world, without extremely sophisticated fasilities. We can only conclude that this material is either an example of parts stolen from BASE-53 in France, or a newly fabricated item, smuggled off Earth by unknown means.
Item 2
Ref: ART51-CON-065.5#02KIT
Container For U-235 Slug. This was nothing more than a standard NATO M-82 7.62mm 250rd belted ammunition container, stripped of all it's markings, and sterilised. There was a tiny amount of ABC within the internal atmosphere, indicating that the can had been openned off-world, possibly for inspection/identification purposes.
Item 3
Ref: ART51-CON-065.5#03BIO
Industrial Thermos Container With Child: by order of General A. West CIC UNSGC, this has been shipped to a special fasility in the USA for analysis, report pending.
Item 4
Ref: ART51-CON-065.5#04T1H
Type One male, identified as Berne. A. SN:51-134001 formally of RGHQ-51. Now in secure storage, pending decontamination.
Items 5 & 6
Ref: ART51-CON-065.5#05T1H
Ref: ART51-CON-065.5#06T1H
Two Type 1 males, identification unknown. Now in secure storage, pending decontamination.
Item 7

Item 10 & 11
Ref: ART51-CON-065.5#10BIO
Ref: ART51-CON-065.5#11BIO
Two small flint pebbles. This is an igneous rock, dated to 440MA using TL dating techniques**.
No samples of vegetation recovered.
Notes
* All M1 ABC samples consistently correctly marked with their unique planetary electro-magnetic ID signatures. Of the total of 297% ABC, only 1% was of the M2 type unless otherwise stated. Thus when compared to previous samples there has been no increase in the levels of M2 ABC. See the Decontamination Report at the bottom of this page.
** Thermo Luminescence Dating (TL dating) is favoured by Geologists and Anthropologists, and related branches, as Carbon dating is only good for the last 50,000 years. Ideal materials are flint, stalagmitic calcite and sediments. The material is heated causing it to luminesce producing the sample's Glow Curve which can be used to date it. NB: Once the test is completed it cannot be repeated on the same sample as the trapped signiture energy has been released. Results are expressed as either:
-
"KA" or Kilo-Annum, thousands of years.
-
"MA" or Mega-Annum, millions of years
-
"GA" or Giga-Annum, billions of years.
*** Fe(L), is apparently chemically identical to Iron (Fe), however it's Specific Gravity (SG) is 3/8th of that of regular iron, hence it's colloquial name of Light Iron. It's mass is more similar to materials like granite at only 3g3. However, it in no way resembles that element in terms of it's behavior. It has proven impossible to distructively analyse in any way what so ever, being impervious to chemical, heat or radioactive bombardment. Only non-destructive methods seem to work, giving the Iron (Fe) result. It is true that within the periodic table Fe is the absolute pinical of atomic stability, and we can only conclude that this is the reason for it's apparent use in the Star Gates. As to how such a material came to be incorporated in the shell of AS#2, we can only speculate, for under normal circumstances we can see no means other than nuclear detonation, by which this material can be broken down. Our evidence for the latter lies in the north polar finds of the early 20th century, when fragments of what is now believed to be a Star Gate was discovered. Likewise the similar fragments in the posession of the Chinese Regiment of the UNSGC, found in the Gobi desert during the 1960's. We speculate that the particals of Fe(L) found in the sample were collected by the animal when engaged in it's normal feeding behavior, the original construct having been destroyed by a nuclear level detonation. [Edit] The "B" Gate some miles outside of the old New Greenham Common base, which was destroyed during an experiment conducted during CON-13, produced identical fragments.
Gravitometer Readings
The readings from the in flight recorder were as expected, with two anomalies:
-
Firstly, during Mission 1, the surface readings recorded by the metre exhibited tremendous variation in signal strength, when compared to the data recorded during missions 7 and 8 of CON-56, when this planet was first visited (G-1597). This time we found an average circa 7% increase in the intensity of the encountered gravitational waves. In the wormhole they were uni-directional, proceeding from G-0001 to G-1597, whereas, the tidal waves measured upon the surface of the planet itself were bi-polar in nature, with the two pulses differing slightly in amplitude, that is the black hole was exerting the greater force. The negative wave being the weaker by about 3%. These negative/positive waves pulsed in a highly regular fashion. NB: The in-flight peak G-forces were 26G (the same as CON-56), but this "peak" was of a significantly longer duration. Further study is essential.
-
During Mission 2, while recording on planet, when no signals were expected, there was a small yet significant regular series of signal spikes for 69 seconds immediately prior to the entry of the team into the return wormhole, which caused local gravity to vary by +/- 8% of Earth normal. This level of variation is harmless, indeed it is not so great that personnel on the ground would have probably even been aware of it's occurance, but it is extremely unusual for local gravity to vary in such a bizarre way. This is normally only associated with gravity waves within a wormhole, wherein they exhibit a tidal quality pulling crews in more than one direction at the same time, currently with the balance of the energy moving in a single direction, towards G-1597. The equipment was checked, and was found to be working well within specification. The metre is so small that it is normally only capable of detecting gravity waves inside wormholes, or as with G-1591 in the presence of a black hole. Surface detectors are built in the form of an "L" shaped aparaitus with it's "limbs" measuring some 300m in length, smaller devices do not normally work outside of the afore mentioned circumstances.
The peak G-forces in Mission 2 achieved 9G, that is just within the limit of the G-Suits provided.
Russian UN Marines suffered 6 fatallities and 2 seriously wounded from extreme G forces during this operation: 2 broken necks, 4 blunt trauma, plus 2 broken backs, the latter surviving.
Decontamination Report
The Nuclear Biological & Chemical (NBC) suits issued and used for this operation, having now been decontaminated produced the following results:
-
An increase of +89% to +197% over the pre CON-52 Standard (100%) ABC level, that is a new total of +297%, see the Saturation Chart below and Captain Kira Lewis' Saturation Report.
-
A number of discharged 6mm rounds were removed from the clothing and equipment of First Lieutenant M. B. Sackville-West, who had been wounded shortly prior to reterning from Mission 4, during an ambush at the Gate (G-0002). These rounds were analysed and identified as of MkVI design of US manufacture. As the US and all other makers cease production of the MKVI 6mm ammunition in September of 2005, we initialy presumed that these were old stock, and that the MkVII ammunition stolen by enemy forces in that year was not at the time of this operation (CON-65) in service with the hostile forces encountered. Casualty analysis of the past four Flight Operations (CON-60,-61,-62,-65) had led us to believe that there had been a steady rise in lethality commenserate with a trickle down supply of the MKVII ammunition. However, comparisons with US and Russian casualties for the same operations suggests that we here in the UK have been suspiciously fortunate, as ALL the wounds sustained were from MkVii ammunition. It is reasonable to expect UK personnel from CON-66 onwards to be subject to attack exclusively with MkVII ammunition, with a consequencial rise in lethality.
UPDATE 08/07/2007: Post the alert of today 08/07/2007, concerning the enforced shut down of the United States' CLEGG program and the arrest of it's staff at AREA-50, the ambush wherein First Lieutenant Sackville--West can be viewed in a different light, as the captured disc appears to be the source of the computer virus responsible for the downing of the AREA-50 and AREA-52 Gatewatch and archive systems on 07/17/2007.
